Lateral

The word 'lateral' is a position word, indicating the outer aspect of something.

If one slaps one's thighs, that is the lateral aspect of the thigh. In contrast, where the thighs touch is the medial side.

A structure can be lateral to another structure, ie more to the outer side.

A lateral X-ray is one taken from the side.
