The piriformis syndrome is buttock pain due to tightening or irritation of the piriformis muscle where it is crossed by the sciatic nerve.

 

Sciatic irritation

A tight piriformis muscle may rub on and irritate the sciatic nerve. Athletes are used to doing piriformis stretches to avoid this complication.
