Joint line tenderness

Written by Dr Sheila Strover on March 14, 2025

Joint line tenderness in the knee indicates possible damage to the meniscus (shock absorber).

Diagnostic value of joint line tenderness

If a meniscus tear is suspected, the doctor will palpate the joint line of the knee for tenderness.

This test, however, may be of low diagnostic value, and other tests may give a more definitive diagnosis.
