MPFL & kneecap injury

Hi All, Well, After things initially went well with rehab since my left transfemoral amputation, now things have gone belly up! I now have, in my one remaining leg, an injury to my MPFL with subluxing patella. I see my rehab Consultant on Tuesday so I can give him the news. Hopefully he'll come up w...

Re: Elective Amputation

Yes. A lot of relief. The CRPS in my left leg was from just below the knee joint so the surgeon had to make sure that anything left of my leg was already above the CRPS level. I had some phantom sensations immediately after surgery for about three weeks but nothing since and no phantom pain. I do st...

Re: Elective Amputation

It's the least I can do consider do many people think about it. The first time I saw my surgeon he wouldn't amputate then. But there were things I hadn't considered. Now I would never say I know it all, but I certainly have a view on the whole process. Of course, I can only say what it has been like...

Elective Amputation

Hi everyone, It's been a long while since I was here so I decided to update..... On Monday 2nd. March this year I had my left leg amputated above knee. It's not something that is recommended by surgeons but I found a surgeon who had both extensive experience of amputating limbs and also experience o...

Re: When is it OK to give up?

Hi all, As it's been a while I thought I'd update...... On Monday 2nd. March this year I finally had my left leg amputated above knee, with Mr. Mannion. My surgery was performed at the Royal Preston Hospital. The CRPS is gone on my left side. For the first three weeks or so I had some strange sensat...

Re: When is it OK to give up?

Hi Everyone, WEll, I did eventually decide upon seeing Mr. Mannion in Blackpool. I had a consultation with him on 12th. February of this year. We discussed a knee replacement and also an above the knee amputation. Nothing is as yet set in stone and it is still very much my decision as to what I want...

Re: When is it OK to give up?

Hi All, Just a quick update......... Yesterday I saw my original OS, Mr. Ved Goswami at SSolihull Hospital. He is of the opinion that Ineed at TKA sooner rather than later. Re: When is it OK to give up?

Hi All, I thought that as I've been off the board for a long time and still having major knee problems, I'd come back and share. The RSD is as it was previously and fortunately once it spred tot he bottom half of my right calf it never went any further. Having sid that, the risk of it worsening is a...

Who is the best person to complain to?

Hi, I've had enough of being fobbed off, pushed from pilar to post and having excuses thrown at me. My OS back in 2007 suggested a PKR as nthign else worked. My left kneecap still subluxes and dislocates of its own accord adn the only thing that has ever helped in a HUGE, hinged knee brace. Although...

Now what?

Hi All, Some of yo knwo my knee history and some don't (check out my signature for a brief idea). After surgery in 2006 I was given a HUGE, very comfortable, easily adjustable, hinged knee brace to wear. it was one which had to go over my clothes because of it's size. It kept my kneecap in place, I ...

Re: When is it OK to give up?

Hi, Well done for starting the support group. With RSD the pain comes about as a result of the sympathetic nervous system going haywire and doing it's own thing. I've also been in the position of asking my OS to amputate - and if he couldn't, to put me in touch with a surgeon who could and would. Of...

Re: HTO- When does it stop hurting?

Hi, Please bear in mind that this is a major surgery. it's not something you can bounce back from in a coulpe of weeks and can take months to heal properly. I've had problems with all my surgeries, the worst being the TTT surgery in 2003 and the surgery in 2006. But then everyone is different and he...

Re: Xmas Day Alone in a Hotel

Hi Ron, I've not been around for a long while now thanks to family and ex family so I have some idea of what you mean. I also understand the concept of cerain noises or frequwencies causing pain - particualrly with the RSD to. Tjose without knee problems can never psosibly understand how it feels an...

Re: Entire leg swollen after knee cap dislocation? Alittle scared ....

HI Lace, Sometimes with a dislocation (was it your kneecap or whole joint?) anything from just the knee right through to the wqhole leg may swell up. It obviously differs from person to person and depends on previous and current activity, whether you practice RICE. However wha worries me about your ...

Re: Super Frustrated ...Just Venting explaining my story

HI Jen, I agree with peg leg. It's the norm here (even for the NHS) to meet with your surgeon and discuss the possible prolems, outcomes, solutions etc. To not even bother to see you himself, I think your surgeon si definitely the wrong doctor for you. I'd be asking for a second opinion. If for any ...
