Re: ROM...where do I start????

i had similar op after dislocation, with 4 weeks in brace before starting pt (gradually increasing brace locked position from locked at 30 degrees to 40 to 60...). gaining rom in pt did not come easy or quickly but i got all my rom back, can now get heel to butt. look to gain about 10 degrees/week, ...

Re: Dented Knee Cap???

it is quite common to have damage to the underside of the patella as a result of a patellar dislocation. the patella goes out of the femoral groove and when it does this it scuffs over the edge of the femur, causing an impaction injury to the cartilage. this happened to me - the impact causing a pot...

Re: Euflexxa??

i tried euflexxa and it helped a little, not dramatically but noticeably. i have a grade 4 cartilage lesion on the underside of the patella from a dislocation. the euflexxa improved comfort a little so that i was able to increase weights and workout intensity a little, and have gained some strength....

Re: Posterior Horn? Does the patellar retinaculum heal w/ rest?

i don't know about the meniscus part, but a mildly torn retinaculum will heal. a lateral release is actually the deliberate cutting of the lateral retinaculum, with the idea that it will heal with a little more laxity to allow patellar movement to the medial side. the medial retinaculum will typical...

Re: bad knee cartilage wear and tear...

before trying any surgical options, your mom might want to look into joint fluid injections; many people are getting dramatic relief from this. the joint fluid (various products with hylauronic acid) cushions and lubricates joints with degenerated cartilage. look at the 'injections into the joint&qu...

Re: Patella dislocations

a dislocation can be accompanied by a lot of soft tissue and/or cartilage damage. an mri will show the extent. i had a patellar dislocation and it came with a lateral meniscus tear, patellar and femoral cartilage damage, medial retinacular rupture, and quad tendon and vmo tear. this was apparent fr...

Re: aci for patella defect and osteotomy

i have similar issues and have decided that the success rate and level of typical return to sport is not high enough to go through such a big op and rehab, with uncertain level of improvement. i am able to bike, swim and jog and hike, not at the same level as before, so maybe i have less drive to do...

Re: 2 LR & NOW HERE COMES THE METAL PLATES & SCREWS!!!!

it's good to trust your dr., it also sensible to get a second opinion if she is having trouble, especially if the dr. is proposing a big operation like that. your current dr. should not have a problem with you seeking a second opinion before proceeding with a big operation based on an unusual diagno...

Re: Literature on repair methods for cartilage defects on the back of the patella?

your injury sounds similar to mine - i have about a 1 cm by 1 cm full thickness lesion on the back of the patella near the median ridge from a traumatic dislocation. my lesion in painful contact when bending while weightbearing or extending w/resistance beyond a certain point. my dislocation had to ...

Re: Knee bends inwards not forwards

i had/have similar issues after knee surgery and long rehab after period of immobilization. p/t and dr say it is related to weak hips and quads and i need strengthen and to work on reducing the tendency to let the knee go inward. this is called femoral anteversion, or rotation. working on hip streng...

Re: Quad tendon rupture

here is an article on quad tendon rupture. http://www.emedicine.com/orthoped/topic274.htm for complete ruptures surgery is necessary. for partial ruptures its seems to be optional to treat non-operatively or surgically. it might depend on the extent of the rupture. if addressed surgically it should ...

Re: Steriod Injections for scar tissue and complications

my o/s injected cortisone into a lump of scar tissue to try and get it to break up and remodel. it didn't work. it was at the medial portal site, pretty close to the margin of the patella tendon, so i wonder if it did any harm.

Re: New to board. Need advice re: medial patellofemoral ligament tear

i completely ruptured my medial retinaculum (which i think the mpfl is part of), it (along with VMO and its tendon) was avulsed from the patella, and I also had tearing into the VMO and its tendon during a dislocation. i had surgery to repair all this, a retinaculum repair/vmo advancement. there was...

Re: Do you recommend your surgeon?

Dr. Gillogly is my current Dr. in Atlanta and I think his would be a good opinion too seek. he is a national aci expert but has not recommended the ACI to me, although i have small full-thickness lesions on the lateral femoral condyle and patella. my symptoms are relatively mild (walking and jogging...
