Re: Articular Cartilage Damage (Medial)

Have you had your gait analyzed? When I was returning to high impact sports after having new cartilage implanted, I had developed some odd habits due to needing to protect the knee post-surgery that I had to unlearn. You could have something that is making you run in a slightly different fashion tha...

Re: Should I get knee surgery??

I also had ACI for the patella and the trochlear groove. I not only feel better, I'm able to do things I wasn't able to do before the surgery because even more than I realized the knee was holding me back. Before the big surgery, I highly recommend doing as much as you can to get your leg strong, an...

Re: CPM machine questions

I found mine very helpful, but I imagine that it depends on your surgery. I've had 4 previous surgeries that didn't use a CPM machine.

Re: roller coaster recovery! NEED HELP!!

Unfortunately recovery isn't linear. I'm over three years out on a different surgery I do agree to an extent that if it hurts you might need to back off, but at the same time there is a difference between bad pain and the pain of your muscles and other tissue learning to be active again. Break down ...

Re: learning to walk again after emerging from knee brace, not doing so good, depres

I very much agree with Brandon123 on the mental part being a big thing. It's easy to focus on what you can't do rather than what you can. But do the PT work and accept that you can't undo 8 weeks of restriction overnight physically or mentally, but you can overcome it.

Re: VMO not activating on one leg due (lateral rotation)

Some studies have found that using an estim machine can help the VMO activate. Also terminal knee extensions with a theraband are helpful (even if they look like they are ridiculous). If you aren't sure if it's activating at all, sit down with a towel under your knee. See if you can tighten through ...

Re: MACI knee surgery

I ran into the PT not being very rigorous issue as well. The problem is two fold I think. First the graft is still very fragile and so you are just limited in what stress you can put on the knee. The other is that I think a lot of people who have cartilage replaced had a fair amount of pain and thus...

Re: Feeling down during recovery?

For me, I texted/IMed with friends. I watched a lot of Netflix and after a couple of weeks I started working from home. I also kept myself busy with personal projects. I toyed around with some computer stuff, I did puzzles, read books once I was off of the morphine and could think again. I also wrot...

Re: advice! will i play again?

I have a friend who had microfracture surgery in her 30s and returned to gymnastics and ballet. She has some pain, but manages to do layouts and such. I had full cartilage replacement for patella and trochlear groove (ACI) and returned to capoeira, parkour and gymnastics. I mostly only have knee pai...

Re: Damage to cartilage under knee cap

It could be weight, it could also be that the damage has slowly been getting worse. Ice and NSAIDS can help if there is inflammation as can wrapping the knee overnight. If you are doing a lot of running or jumping, things that are load bearing on the knee, you might want to consider reducing those, ...

Re: Need guidance 1 week out from surgery

Every recovery is different. Just because you were fine after previous surgeries doesn't mean you'd have the same recovery from a different, later surgery. While I haven't had microfracture, my friend did and she was on crutches for 6 weeks. I'm guessing a different part of the knee as she was no we...

Re: PLEASE HELP....I AM IN SOOOO MUCH PAIN

I'd ask your doctor to consider switching your pain meds. For me, percocet just makes me feel nauseous and doesn't help with pain. Vicodin, on the other hand, works great for me when I have surgery.

Re: 4 months still can't do straight leg lift

What sort of things are they having you do for this? I would recommend things like laying on your back and tightening the quads, while pulling your toes toward your head and pushing your heels away from your head. Also if you have somebody who can help you, have them hold your leg up and see if you ...

Re: ACL tear - Gymnastics & Cheerleading without an ACL as a "Coper"

Vickster's advice is good. I didn't have a complete ACL tear, but I was doing gymnastics and capoeira on a partially torn ACL and I know a guy who did capoeira for two years on a torn ACL (in both our cases, we didn't know of the injury when it happened). It is possible, but does have a fair amount ...

Re: Anyone had MACI stem cells in patellofemoral part of the knee??

I had it on the patella and the trochlear groove. I've had good results so far (about 2.5 years out). It did require a boat load of PT and working outside of PT to get things back. But I'm working on handsprings, drop jumps and the like.
