Really bad week
« on: September 09, 2004, 03:20:36 AM »
Hey everybody,

I haven't been around the boards for awhile.  I just really need a place to vent right now.  As far as weeks go, this may be, overall, one of the worst I've had.  My uncle was in a bad accident and is dying.  My great-aunt and two family friends died.  AND I just got devastating news from the OS yesterday.

The knee's been bothering me for a little while.  I was expecting the typical progressing arthritis, blah, blah, blah.  I really wasn't prepared for how bad it was.  First, my unloader brace has stretched out my MCL repair to the point that the knee's unstable again.  Second, I have really extensive bone loss on the medial femoral condyle (say, no bone left at all on the entire weight-bearing surface!)

So... I have a repeat MRI next Wednesday.  If it looks better than the x-rays did, my OS wants me to talk to a joint specialist about the possiblity of re-reconstructing my MCL and doing a UKR.  But realistically, I'll need TKR within the next few months.  Oh, and my 30th birthday is Friday.

I don't even know what to do.  It's just been one thing after another after another.  My husband has been rather less than helpful throughout all this too.  I told him about my knee and he just said, "Oh.  OK."

Anyway... Any thoughts or prayers for my family are appreciated.  I hope the rest of you guys are having a better week.

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

I'm so sorry you are having to go through all this. Sometimes life just sucks!

I don't really know what to say to make you feel better but i am thinking of you and your family, and i hope the MRI brings better news.

Please don't try and struggle on alone - you can always get support here when 'real' people are less than helpful. And i am sure your husband cares but sometimes men just aren't sure what to say so they say nothing.

Happy birthday for tomorrow, and let's hope it means the start of a better year.

Take care,

Liz

Danielle,

How terrible!  It seems like we start falling apart when we turn 30...  (I learned I needed a TTT on my 30th birthday...)  I hope all goes well, and they can find a solution for you.  You're in my prayers!

Hugs,
Chris  :)

Hey Dani !!

I hope you soon get some sunshine back in your life.
So sorry to hear about everything you have to go through right now. I'm sure your husband cares they just aren't so up on what they can say these men, I know cause my husband is the same. He has big difficulties in showing feelings, but he sticks by my side at that's what counts. So if he only says ok doesn't mean he don't care. It's his way in showing you I'm here for you. Send you a big big hug and some of our Swedish sunshine.

Danielle,

I swear it must be the late summer funk going around.  I feel like my knee has an alien inside gnawing its way out...like the chest-burster in Alien.  I'm ready to do my own IT band release with my handy Swiss Army Knife.  And I'm sitting in AZ helpless, watching dear friends in Florida get hammered again and again by hurricanes.

In case you want to feel better about your life...think of our kneegeek Maggie, whose husband and 3 of her 4 daughters have Gardener's Syndrome/FAP.  Her husband is end-stage, and is the longest surviving GS patient in history.  We are trying desperately to fly his daughter and only grandson in from Amsterdam where they live...but the hurricanes get in the way.  The hurricane also ripped part of the roof off their house.  Oh, and Maggie has degenerative disc disease with a collapsing spine, failed ACI on her knee, and needs an ankle replacement...in case you ever felt like someone out there had it in for you....

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that the knee issues seem particularly bad right now, but they do go in cycles.  Hopefully yours will get better soon.

Heather-

I have a really sharp Benchmade knife you can borrow.  It is a "military-only" purchase, so you can cut through anything!  I will use the band-saw to cut mine off!  (J/K!)

Danielle-

Hang in there!  I hope your week is getting better.  I have a hurricane I can sell you real cheap.  His name is Ivan.  He'll water your lawn and clear out everything in your yard!  Heck, he may even bring you a few new lawn ornaments!  Sending you many hugs!

Thanks for the encouragement everybody!!

An update: my uncle just died.  Actually, it's more of a relief than anything, at this point.  He's going to be an organ donor, so at least something good is coming out of this whole thing.

I'm going out now to celebrate the old b-day with some friends.  Have a good week.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. My sympathy and thoughts with you and your family. Organ donation is a great act on your family.

Have some fun celebrating the birthday. Always a nice way to blow some steam off.

Danielle,

Although it is very hard to deal with the loss of someone close to you, Organ donation will help keep that memory alive.  I lost my father less than two months after my surgery and on my youngest daughter's first birthday.  He was dying from pancreatic cancer and ended up have congestive heart failure that night.  I was devastated because I thought we had a little more time with him.  However, no matter how hard it was to lose him at such an emotionally difficult time, I was glad that he did not have to suffer the worst of the cancer.  The only organ that he was able to donate because of the cancer was his corneas.  At his burial, the funeral director told us that he got a call that morning and because of my father's gift, an 18 yr old young man can see.  It nearly broke my heart, but I think about the fact that a part of my father lives on in another and is giving him a chance he may not have had.

My deepest sympathies are with you and your family.

Love, Christina

Thanks everybody for all the words of encouragement.  We actually had one more death in the family since my last post (that makes a total of 5).  Everybody seems to be doing OK all things considering.

I did get some encouraging news, however.  My MRI last week didn't show much change in the bone loss from the one I had last year, despite how bad the x-rays looked.  So, I'm going to see a joint specialist to see if he can do an MCL re-reconstruction and UKR.  If not, I'll probably need a TKR.  But at least there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel (I just hope it's not a train... ;D)
