Meniscal arthroscopy advice?
« on: August 02, 2004, 09:56:41 AM »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone had knowledge or advise about a [grade 3] meniscal tear I had diagnosed several months ago.
Basically the OS said it was "mush" and he could "clean it up with arthroscopy. He didn't really expand much on that, just "let him know if I wanted to schedule."

First, it's not extremely painful, just really annoying the way it "clicks" everytime I bend it. I've read alot of stories on this site which suggest [as well as my OS did] these things "can have complications" not to mention accelerate arthritis.

Does anyone know the harm in leaving the damaged meniscus?

P.S. : from old injuries, I have small quads on that leg, and I'm concerned that would really hamper rehab/ stength even more. I'm in my 40's, do alot of physical work, and can't afford "down time"

Advice please!

Hey!!

A meniscus won't heal itself unless it isn't in the bloodsupplied area. If you have that clicking maybe it's loose pieces and when they interfere between the surfaces they can make a lot damage. I would go for the surgery if I were you. If żour doc is only going to take away loose pieces and trimm the edges then you are back on your feet imiidiately. Maybe you feel stiffness, swelling and be a bite sore the nearest weeks.
Wish you good luck wether you choice.

I think Nettan meant to say "unless it is in the bloodsupplied area"! Which incidentally is only on the outer edge of the meniscus.

All the best...

If it is mush, there could be pieces floating around doing more damage. If you are having pain, even bearable pain, that's a troubling sign.
