What is crepitus?
« on: July 28, 2004, 02:14:42 AM »
Hi

Does anyone know what crepitus means?  And why it would restrict flexion?

It's just kind of a generic term for a grinding, crunchy feeling in your joint.  If it's caused by scar tissue or somesuch then that's why it would restrict your range of motion.

You can do a search for crepitus on google.

 ::) :) It's what most of us have! ;) :D ;D 8)

Sorry for the smarty-pants answer . . . I just couldn't resist.

Seriously, as already pointed out crepitus is the gravel-ish, noisy reaction your knee makes when you bend it.

It's not the crepitus itself that restricts flexion. It's the underlying condition. Besides scar tissue, I think generally uneven areas and debris contribute to it.

...and sometimes it's caused by nothing more than just the natural loss of lubrication in the knee joint that occurs as we age.  Crepitus, in and of itself, is not a symptom of something wrong.  It's just the noise.  If the noise is CAUSED by something (as everyone has pointed out...such as scar tissue, adhesions, etc.), then there could be loss of flexion.  But the crepitus itself doesn't cause anything but SOUND!

Good luck!

Come sit next to me and I'll do some ROM exercises! I'll let you hear what crepitus is ;D. As long as it doesn't hurt it's ok. Most people have it in a minor way but don't realize it. Only when it becomes painfull you point your attention to it and get fixed on it.
