what is going on with my knee??
« on: July 16, 2004, 06:36:21 PM »
i started having knee problems when i was 14. i have had athroscopy surgery. i started having problems with both knees when i was about 16.  i am now 23, i have pain all the time sitting standing, it locks up, stays swole, lot of kneecap movement, it doesn't feel good to touch it. since i had surgey for left knee i really can't feel my leg, it isn't numb, hard to decribe, but i am having some kind of foot problem related to my knee. i am suppose to have chondromalacia never told what stage, osteoarthritis, subluxing patella, tendinitis, thats all i know. my doctor was suprised at all the damage when i had my artroscopy, but now he sends me on my way like i am not in pain.  here is what part of my operative report said, this is from 12-23-96:::: the medial patellar facet demonstrated deep fissuring and swelling of the articular cartilage. there was softening of the articular surface where it appeared smooth was very easily indented and was soft by probe. as the probe moved into the center of the lateral tibial compartment, it easily fell in the microcrevices............resection was carried down deep into the middle layer of this articular cartilage because fragmentation was so extensive.  what does this mean??? also on my microscopic examination it reads:: there are a few fragments of fibrocartilage and many fragments of synovium with some actual papillation of the synovial surface and extensive lymphocytic infiltrate. what does this mean????  i know there is more wrong no one will listen.  i was very active in sports i have seen my health just go down. i can't even play sports. it hurts to walk, a lot of the time i am limping. some of you may asks what started this, part heredity, i had bumped the side of my knee, but we were thinking all this was going on cause of the damage seen after surgey. the bump just made it swell andi realized it was a problem. it has alsp went to both of my wrists. i am in a lot of pain typing this. i really need answers. thanks. this is just a small version of what is going on, sorry this is so long, i have been reading this sites archives, helpful!! ??? :-/ :'( :'(

Sorry you are in so much pain. I can't interpret your surgical notes for you, but it doesn't matter. You are in pain, that's what matters! What kind of doctor did you see before? You should definitely get a second (and a third, if necessary) opinion from a knee specialist. Don't let them brush you off. You deserve some answers to what's causing your pain. If nothing else, you deserve pain management. Don't give up. It's tiring to do the research to find a good specialist in your area, and to go through making an appointment and going through the whole story with another doctor (or two or three). But that's the best way to get some answers. Hang in there and give yourself the gift of another opinion.

Hi KCB, I have a similar problem with my knee.  I have chondromalacia.  "Fissuring" are small crevices in the cartilage behind the knee cap.  It sounds like your cartilage has broken into tiny pieces and is floating around in the joints- which does cause a lot of pain.  All the other terminology are different parts of joint tissue that are swelling and filled with fluid.  Even with surgery it doesn't always go away and that is maybe what still is happening.

If you feel there is more going on then see another doctor for a second opinion.  It's worth your health.  In the meanwhile I would take something like advil and ice your knee up three times a day, including after you run errands, clean or whatever.

Good luck......

thanks for the replies. icing my knee---no, ice and me knee do not mix. also i looked up the word lymphocytic it said something about white blood cells. so that has got me scared. normal kneed people when you feel there knee you can feel the nice hard ball, there knee cap. not when you feel mine, i had one doctor and then saw another and he was worse than the first. hopefully i will get a car soon and i can go to unc.
