HA Injections
« on: September 25, 2021, 07:57:04 PM »
Hi,

I wanted to write my recent experience on here, encase there are other people in a similar situation and my experience might help other people.

I have had another recent flare up with OA in my left knee. Last flare up was 2 years ago. I'm now going for HA injections as I'm struggling to walk at work. I will give an update once I have had them and what my results/experience were.

Past injury:
Iíve got grade 4 arthritis in my left knee from previous 3 knee ops after a wakeboarding accident when I was 18, I'm now 34 years old:

1st op Oct 2006: Left knee ACL graft repair, small medial and lateral meniscus removed.

2nd op Nov 2009: Left knee 1cm micro fracture (MFX) carried out on lateral femoral condyle and some more lateral meniscus removed.

3rd op Sept 2011: left knee 2cm micro fracture (MFX) carried out on the same are as before
2006: Left knee ACL graft repair, small medial and lateral meniscus removed.

2009: Left knee 1cm micro fracture (MFX) carried out on lateral femoral condyle and some more lateral meniscus removed.

2011: left knee 2cm micro fracture (MFX) carried out on the same area

Good luck. Are you having it combined with steroid?
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09 (lat meniscus, lat condyle defect)
LK scopes 8/2/10 & 16/12/10
RK scope 5/2/15 (menisectomy, Hoffaís fat pad trim)
LK scope 10.1.19 medial meniscectomy, trochlea MFX
LK scope 19.4.21 MFX to both condyles & trochlea, patella cartilage shaved, viscoseal, depo-medrone

Quite worn, was scoped in April, microfracture done on both condyles and trochlea and a general tidy up. He also injected steroid and HA hence my question.  No more surgery really an option now until TKR needed, but may have injections if have flare up.

Doing ok, wasnít helped by having to have ankle ligaments repaired just before Christmas!
Cycling, swimming, walking not great but managing. ROM better around 120, before only about 105 and couldn't straighten either

I will asked my doctor that's doing my injections about having steroid injections as well. good to see your range of motion getting better.
hope things keep getting better for you, I know how tough it is sometimes with bad knees

Hallo @vickster.
I am curious about you MFX experience. I assume the first MFX from 2019 failed as you had done it agin in 2021 :(.
I have just had the MFX surgery on medial tibial condyle (1x1 cm) about 3 weeks ago. I dont have any swelling, I have nearly full ROM. But the microfracture site hurts (sharp pain) - if I try to put my leg in extension.
I know its very early (3 weeks from the surgery), but I have not been able to find any info regarding this. Is this normal? Or does it mean it did not work?
Many thanks for your answer!

Hi,
Iíd say itís much too soon to make any conclusion about success or not. Realistically itís a 6 month recovery.  The areas of the condyles where I had the mfx are still sore if prodded, a year on. I expect it always will be.

What did the surgeon say? Your physio?

Was the mFX on a weight bearing area?

To warn you, you may never be entirely pain free as mfx produces fibrocartilage which is rougher than hyaline so movement is less smooth, also the bone is impacted during the process which is where the pain comes from and not the actual cartilage which has no nerve endings itself as I understand it.

I donít know if the second MfX on my trochlea was a failure or simply a different area.
