calf muscles aches/acl
« on: May 02, 2021, 06:54:25 PM »
Hi all.5 years ago,i had an accident where in my left knee i had a ruptured acl,2 fractures & badly torn mcl.My right knee also had 2 fractures & a torn mcl.
I recovered relatively well,no surgery. But these last couple of months i've been having discomfort(not pain) in both knees but also my calf muscles are aching on the outer side.Has anyone else exprienced this & if so,any advice would be welcome. Are my calf problems connected to my knees? I'm 65 years old.
Thanks.

It might be worth seeing a physio in the first instance to get the joints, muscles and your gait assessed and potentially a knee specialist. Those injuries to the bones and ligaments may well have led to some arthritis (as well as having some age-related wear and tear) which might explain the discomfort

Do you stretch or do anything like yoga or Pilates to keep flexible? A ruptured ACL won’t heal, so that deficiency may also be contributing

Good luck
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09 (lat meniscus, lat condyle defect)
LK scopes 8/2/10 & 16/12/10
RK scope 5/2/15 (menisectomy, Hoffa’s fat pad trim)
LK scope 10.1.19 medial meniscectomy, trochlea MFX
LK scope 19.4.21 MFX to both condyles & trochlea, patella cartilage shaved, viscoseal, depo-medrone

Thanks for your response Vickster. The trouble is,we've been locked down for 16 months thanks to this dam virus.I normally see a Mctimmoney chiropractor but she hasn't been allowed to see anyone until recently, but i'm going to see her on Tuesday so fingers crossed!I'd be too scared to go anywhere else as have been isolated for so long now it freaks me out.
I'm sure you're right that arthritis is setting in,but normally i'm ok.It's just this calf ache that's getting me down.My back is not good either,so all a contributing factor i would think.I do do stretches as best i can but again,i'd be too worried about going to pilates or yoga...too many people around.
Thanks again :)

Plenty of Pilates / Yoga teachers offering Zoom classes, or there’s lots on YouTube, might be worth investigating. Or just do some more regular stretching at home.

There’s a good list of exercises to try here, could also give a foam roller or tennis ball a try to calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes etc if feeling brave!

I’m in the UK, but most chartered physios have been practising pretty much throughout (I guess chiropractors are classified differently)

Your back probably isn’t helping as you say, everything is linked
