Meniscus Surgery Rehab Timeframe
« on: January 05, 2021, 01:59:32 PM »
What is the general timeframe for rehab with a partial meniscectomy? Young athlete looking to get back to sports post surgery.

Probably 3-6 months, if not longer for high impact sport.
You however really want to avoid menisectomy at all costs in young active people (due to the risk of accelerating arthritis), so a repair with stitches. (rather than trim/removal) will mean non weight bearing and a very cautious rehab.
Not all tears can be repaired, better to allow for healing before surgery assuming there’s no locking or buckling.
Lateral or medial meniscus? What sort of tear? Where in meniscus?

Better to be super patient now rather than rushing into menisectomy which could potentially mess up a knee for life!!  Hard for a young person to think long term
But it’s absolutely crucial here!

There’s a good meniscus primer and other resources in the Learning Portfolio (link at top of screen)
