Meniscal Allograft with Bone Bridge
« on: June 18, 2020, 10:52:35 AM »
Hey there. I haven't posted for years.

I'm now waiting for a lateral meniscal allograft. My surgeon, Tim Spalding, is going for the bone bridge technique.

Has anyone had any experience with this? It's not clear, but I am assuming this bone bridge is a chunk of the donor's tibia, and there's therefore a risk of rejection? I'm confining any results that talk about a synthetic bone bridge. I can get in touch with Mr Spalding, but I'd rather keep that for more pressing things that come up.

Thanks!

I thought maybe you can search for 'bone bridge' here on this paper, which has a very well respected senior author - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6209369/

I give you the link so that you can follow the references cited, but it says
"Meniscal allografts express Class I and II histocompatibility antigens and therefore carry the potential for a host immune response. Bone grafts are known to be immunogenic, and therefore, when requested, the presence of bone plugs or a bone bridge attached to the meniscal allograft may increase the risk of an immune response. In practice, however, this has not been reported as a significant problem; in one series, with an average of 4.5 years of follow-up, none of the transplanted fresh meniscal osteochondral allografts provoked an immune response."
