Knee "catches" when extending
« on: September 05, 2019, 03:35:17 PM »
When I lie down and extend my leg it "catches."  What can I do to stop this from happening?

You need to find out why itís doing it. Is it painful? If not, itís likely normal or down to muscle imbalance or mal tracking. If so, get assessed by a sports / musculoskeletal physio
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
2nd scope on 16/12/10
RK arthroscopy on 5/2/15
Lateral meniscus trim, excision of hoffa's fat pad, chondral stabilisation
LK scope 10.1.19 medial menisectomy, trochlea microfracture, general tidy up

Well, I don't know what's causing it.  I went to a orthopedic or whatever and he said I had a torn gracilis after taking an MRI.  So I went to a physio therapist and they said to exercise it and stuff.  And I've been doing all these stretches and things I think would help.  But nothing's really helped.

But is it painful? Thatís the important bit. If not, itís probably just normal for you and not a worry (my knees and other joints pop, crack, snap constantly, no pain just live with)

Iíd see another physiotherapist if you do have pain or swelling, fresh pair of eyes. What country are you in? How old are you?

No there's no pain.  Would there be any way of reversing it?  I heard someone say the treatment sometimes with knee problems is the reverse of the cause.

So for your questions I am from USA and I am 37.  But no there's no pain.

I wouldnít stress about it then. Maybe try having a series of sports massages to loosen up tight and shortened muscles, see if that helps (now that will hurts but temporarily :) ). Find a top notch sports massage therapist, get a foam roller too and asknthe therapist to show you how to use it (and watch you while you do)

Can you just expand on this a little further?  It's so annoying.  There doesn't seem to be any pain, but there's no relief from the constant idea that it's not going to stop that annoying "catch."

Whatís to expand? You should see an expert to assess if thereís a cause (and how to address, like a muscle imbalance causing the kneecap to not track say)  or if itís just normal for you however annoying t might be. No pain means likely nothing to worry about. Try to not think about it and so stop the annoyance

Or it could be ligament, meniscus, cartilage softening or roughening (37 and active is certainly possible to have some joint changes), all of which could be pain free
