Should kneeling on an old injury hurt?
« on: May 18, 2019, 05:29:14 AM »
Hi everyone, about 15 years ago I dislocated my knee and chipped a piece off the patella. I had surgery for it but no pins or anything and it seemed to heal fine. However, I was recently talking to a friend and they were shocked that I still can't kneel on that knee - is this normal? None of the doctors ever followed up after my stitches were out, just referred me to physio and I think its too late now to go chase them down.

I have full movement in it but it buckles sometimes and I get a lot of pulled muscles in that whole leg now. Should I see a specialist or is it just going to always be like that?

If it hasn't gotten better in 15 years, I'd say it won't ever get better.  And of course, you are now 15 years older with less healing ability.  You said your knee buckles some time, that's usually due to osteoarthritis and/ or muscle weakness.  In most places you'd have to see a specialist in order to get a referral to a physiotherapist.  From there you could learn about exercises you need to do to keep the leg as strong as possible and that should get rid of or reduce the buckling and adding strength is always good for the cartilage so it could in theory reduce some of the pains from kneeling on your knees.

Kneeling is overrated anyways. I'm sure your friend has never had a knee injury if he/she was shocked that you can't kneel.  I can kneel for a few seconds or minutes but I haven't tried in a long time.  If I spend the day on my knees (as I have before in CPR classes), I'm in some pretty bad pains later in the day and the following day as well.  I don't kneel anymore and don't expect to regain those abilities ever again.  I'd say if it hurts, your body is telling you not to do it.  Good luck.

Okay it's good to know that it isn't a major concern.  :) I've just learned to live with it so I don't think about it anymore and their comment blindsided me a bit.

It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one with that kind of lingering problem though, thanks for the reply!

I did pretty serious damage to my knee in '05 & to this day I have about 30 seconds of kneeling w/o it becoming too painful to bear. As you say...just something you learn to live with.
April, 2005 - ACL rupture, medial meniscus tear within posterior horn to articular surface, abnormal signal within lateral meniscus, partial tear MCL, bone contusions tibia/fibula, Baker's cyst.
No repairs.

Ditto, 2009 caused a defect on condyle, bit that connects with ground when kneeling. Can't put weight through it at all.

However, if concerned, get the knee checked, could be unrelated to the old injury. A lot can happen in 15 years. Mines gone from fine to quite advanced arthritis in all compartments in 10
