What prescription drugs are good for severe knee pain?
« on: December 19, 2018, 05:40:32 AM »
I'm having severe knee pain and I can't get it under control with NSAIDs, ice, stim, and tons of Kratom. Nothing is helping. You know it's bad when it hurts even with an ice pack on the skin numbing it. Any help will be appreciated.

You should really see your doctor to discuss medication. The strong stuff is addictive, has side effects and should be avoided if possible (you may well need I think after the arthroscopy for a short time).
What NSAID do you take, how often? You should be wary of taking any NSAID for
any length of time without a stomach protector (like omeprazole)
You could add paracetamol (acetominophen) which is very effective when taken as directed 3-4x a day. Discuss with your doctor or the pharmacist

Are you using a compression sleeve, the ones for patella issues? Elevating?

I can't get any relief from pain no matter what I do. Even lying kills me. I've been taking Advil it doesn't seem to help at all. Started taking Tylenol. It doesn't help either. Pain is getting worse. I have Arthroscopy on January 11th. It can't come fast enough. But I still believe I will be in pain after as well.

Advil is quite weak in standard form, ask a pharmacist whether naproxen might be better. Also, are you taking the 500mg Tylenol at the full dose? If you do, it can be as effective as an opioid. Otherwise, codeine might be more effective alongside.

Good luck with the op. Donít go in thinking it wonít help but it may take a few months to recover
Hopefully theyíll find an obvious cause for your pain like a torn meniscus or loose body

Iím going under the knife myself on the 10th

Tylenol can also damage your liver, so you might need to take a look at naproxen. In this study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6373158 they found that naproxen is superior to ibuprofen when it comes to joint pain.

Vickster what's your mobility during activities of daily living? Do you get around? I think my joint is just degenerating because of my previous injury. I can't stand for more than 5min without aching pain.

Yes, I'm pretty much fully active, I have a desk job, and I do have to make sure I move around or I stiffen up and I often keep my foot up on a foot rest.
I can't kneel, can't run, cycling is becoming more uncomfortable due to lateral knee pain from the osteochondral defect and caught meniscus, but I've done 3600 road miles this year. Walking starts to make my knees sore after 15 minutes, I just slow down or stop for a bit

I do take a fair amount of medication though (not just for knee)

I've lived with this and more recently other joint issues for 9 years, so I adapt and do my best to manage the discomfort

Hopefully you'll get some answers and relief from the scope. Your knee is probably inflamed and needs to heal
