Hi vikster, one more question. What is the difference between vericel Maci vs normal Maci? Are they both two stage? Dr Farr is saying I can get Maci done in the uk but I thought they’d lost their licence?
Sorry if these are dumb questions. Google and what the dr saying is confusing me!

I don’t know the answers to any of your questions to be honest. I don’t think there’s any NHS funding of MACI now as the data was too sketchy for the regulatory funding authority I think. Privately, not sure, insurance won’t cover but self funding might be an option. Someone like Prof Briggs at Stanmore would know what the options here are.
Or Adrian Wilson who’s also an osteotomy expert (maybe more long bones than PFJ)

It’s years since I discussed this with any doctors as I’m beyond being a candidate for any cartilage repair beyond microfracture as I now have arthritis in all compartments.
If you’re seriously considering surgery here, probably best to take a trip and get some consultations after email communication. You’ll need to understand what you need in terms of referral as an overseas patient

Thanks. Yeah agree re consults.
I’ve consulted with dr saw via email and he says he would just do lateral release and not AMZ. This is the only reason I wouldn’t use him; all my other surgeons agree I need the realignment. Maybe if I see him he would say differently.. I think his stem cell procedure is superior to Maci after my research. One option is I get realigned and then in the future if I need cartilage work I can go get his stem cell done. The six weeks in Malaysia is difficult as I have a 1and 3 year old.

That sounds sensible as once the joint is realigned and you’ve rehabbed, the cartilage damage might not be so symptomatic, or it may not be through to bone in which case repair not needed
