I'm tired..
« on: July 03, 2018, 09:58:10 PM »
I really need some help. I can't stand this situation anymore. I'm tired.

7 month ago, I had an arthroscopy of my left knee, medial meniscus, totally distroyed. Surgeron had no choice, he couldn't repair it and cutted lot of my menisci.

I had a bucket handle. I have full ROM back, some pain walking, but OK..

3 weeks after surgery, an other issue : I have like burning sensation in my quad, near my patella. When I put cold stuff on my quad, it's like a fire. When I wear a Jean, I have pain. It's horrible.

I talked with docs about it. It's probably a nerve issue. Some nerves probably cutted during the arthroscopy.

I can t walk long distance, can't wear jeans, can't put ice on that knee.

I've just been 27 and athlete, 1m84 and 78 kilo, not overweight, 0 fat.

I talked with my doc and he told me that thèses kind of stuff can last forever. This is really killing me.

I had mri (OK) and today x ray (OK).

At this point I really cannot imagine my life in the future, and I will Never be a zombie taking drugs all my life long (they won't make money on me, they have to give me the key to heal).

I'm very tired to feel that pain all days, I have an EMG planned next week.

I heard about Crps and I'm very scary of that thing.

They will never cure that sickness.

Can you guys bring me some good vibes?
Who had a similar experience?

I hate to cry and blame what s happening to me but I'm exhausted, sometimes I wanna die, that pain is horrible.

Thanks from France.

Sorry for your problems, Frenchknee. But good that your MRI and X-ray were OK. I believe key here is to decide whether you have nerve damage from the arthroscopy, or not. It can happen during any surgery, but I believe it is quite rare. In any case, I think it is important to get to the bottom with this in order to figure out the next step.

Have you visited a pain specialist? A doctor who is specialized in nerve pain and such? For example, one surgeon suggested that I have CRPS in my knee, and sent me to a pain specialist, who after some basic testing dismissed it immediately. So it is important to get assessed by a pain specialist if one suspects nerve pain/CRPS. Also, from your description, your case doesn't sound like CRPS, which tends to be more general I believe. So don't worry about that.

So, I think the next step is to go to a pain specialist so it can be determined if this is a pure damaged nerve thing, or not. Maybe you can google around a bit and see if you have some pain clinics or something in your area? Or ask your surgeon to refer you to a pain specialist who is an expert on nerve pain? Just my thoughts.
RK sharp pain while running, diagnosis chondromalacia patellae 6/09
RK arthroscopic chondroplasty 9/09
RK rehab, recovery, 90% normal, started running again -> back to square one 5/15
RK diagnosis patellofemoral arthritis + LK diagnosis chondromalacia patellae 8/15 -> conservative treatment

I second the idea of a pain specialist. I had "mild" nerve damage/impingement in my right knee/shin after having 4 procedures on that knee in  just 6 months (unavoidable though). After the 4th procedure, I kept getting a burning, shooting pain down my right shin and  just assumed it was part of my long, 12 month rehab and would eventually go away. It only got worse.

I finally consulted my OS and PT who BOTH told me we would start with nerve injections, and if that didn't help, they would send me to a pain specialist. I couldn't sleep, I could barely exercise, and it hurt ALL of the time. Luckily, the injections worked somewhat, we changed up my rehab to keep pressure off that nerve constantly, and after 3 injections over 5 weeks, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel.

I STILL need to get it injected every 6-7 months or so to keep the nerve from driving me crazy, but it at least made life more bearable.

One other thing I'll add---I've heard wonderful things about a drug called gabapentin that is becoming more used in the United States for nerve pain. Apparently it works MUCH better than Neurontin (which my mom said was like eating candy with no pain relief at all). I don't know how severe your nerve damage is, but I wanted to throw the info out to you, just in case.

Anyway, I am very sorry you are still suffering so severely...but I agree pain management specialists can often do WAY more than orthopedic doctors. They helped me 2 other times when the orthopedic Dr admitted he wasn't the expert in pain relief following a traumatic (and damaging) childbirth that screwed up my left hip. I was so glad they referred me to the pain clinic, as it was the ONLY thing that helped make life better and be more specific in addressing the actual issue.

Neurontin and gabapentin are actually the same medication (brand name and generic molecule).
Maybe you're thinking of pregabalin (Lyrica, a newer neuromodulator from the same manufacturer)?
