Six months post TKR, looking for your advice??
« on: June 03, 2018, 03:04:10 AM »
Had routine TKR with above average recovery. 65 year old male, active cyclist. 3 month X-ray normal and
ROM good. At six months X-rays showed possible signs of loosening. Went thru aspiration, CRP, and other blood tests to check for infection. No infection indicated. Surgeon said come back in three months for more X-rays as sometimes the bone around implant can withdraw and then return as part of normal healing process. At this point I now have some deep ache from knee down into lower leg usually about three hours after cycling. Sometimes difficult to stand due to shooting pain, sometimes a minute later I can stand walk with no pain. Have zero pain throughout cycling. Only after. 10-15 miles normally have no post ride  pain. 20-35 miles riding results in a lot of aching even with ice, alive, voltaren . Usually better about 24 hours later. I realize this may be signs of loosening, but wonder if it may be a stress fracture around tibia or some sort of nerve impingement etc??? Have two months until re X-ray. Any thoughts as to what this is, and if I should discontinue my cycling? Thank you.

I'd contact the surgeon for advice, maybe bring the X-ray forwards. Stick to short rides in the meantime
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
2nd scope on 16/12/10
RK arthroscopy on 5/2/15
Lateral meniscus trim, excision of hoffa's fat pad, chondral stabilisation
LK scope 10.1.19 medial menisectomy, trochlea microfracture, general tidy up

the fact you only have pain later means your pain is inflammatory, meaning something irritates the joint. i would definitely stay  away from activities which cause inflammatory response for now until you  see your doc.
