Can someone please explain my report to me?
« on: April 20, 2018, 03:54:03 AM »
I went back to my Dr today to get the results of my scan.  Bottom line she said, nothing we can really do.  And that most of the pain was in my mind.

I would really appreciate if someone could explain the results of the scan to me, so that I can understand it...google is great, to a point!

Thank you.

It indicates you have arthritis (some severe full thickness) across the different areas of the knee joint (more so on the medial/inside areas) and degenerate meniscus tissue which is usual where there's arthritis

How old are you?
Have you tried Physio or hydrotherapy? Do you do regular gentle non load bearing exercise like swimming or cycling?
Anti inflammatory medication used?
Are you overweight?
You might find hyaluronic acid injections help lubricate the joint (they work well for about half of people and can give relief typically for 1-2years).

You might also find some mindfulness type pain management helps? Ask to be referred to a pain management specialist

Otherwise, depending on your age and if the pain is severe during the day and night, it might be time to discuss replacement surgery with a knee specialist

Good luck :)

I also wonder if you're in the US or in the UK? In the US, there would be many options, but I know national health systems often don't offer much  in the way of choice. Your degenerative changes don't come across very severely on the MRI to suggest replacement, BUT only you know how you feel. ;)  My surgeon swears that the MRIs he sees are correct only half the time---and they miss A LOT. My surgeon swore by my in-office examination alone that I had 2 meniscus tears. My fancy MRI with contrast couldn't see them, but he swore they were there. Sure enough, last week's surgery proved THREE meniscus tears, with lots of floating pieces of torn meniscus getting caught in my joint, contributing to my fast and furious joint degeneration over the last 10 months.

I get the feeling you are not being given the opportunity for an arthroscopy (or anything else???) to evaluate/see inside the joint to further evaluate the problem and what might be contributing to your joint degeneration (?).  :( If possible, that would be the route I took, but I'm also in the US with private insurance and many, many more options.

I wish you the best.

I forgot to add I know many people who benefit from hydrotherapy, pool exercise, and hyaluronic acid injections (if possible/available).

I was also floored by the suggestion that some of the pain is in your head. Wow! >:( That was so uncalled for.
