Help! HTO + OATS
« on: March 12, 2018, 07:46:22 PM »
My dr is recommending HTO + OATS. I had a Fullerkson Osteomomy as a teenager and it was misery. Can anyone who has had this give me the ins and outs? Do this or just OATS? I had a failed Microfracture in sept. Thanks.

I'd think that there's no point having OATS if your joint is misaligned to the point of needing to have an osteotomy.  Where's the defect?  Have you had CT scans to fully assess your joint? How big is the defect/defects?

I would see specialists in OATS, osteotomy and even unicompartmental replacements - which may well be different surgeons.  I'd also look at all conservative options

What symptoms do you have?  How is your daily function (sport aside)?

More and more surgery isn't always the answer

I was going to have MACI in 2010, dreadful battle to get approval and referral to an expert, had the harvest scope...OS didn't harvest as he discovered kissing defects and said the MACI would fail without an osteotomy (DFO) - however he said to have both together, it would be a huge surgery, painful and with a 2 year rehab and hope it would work.  I didn't ever proceed and I'm very glad.  I've managed since with hyaluronic acid, physio, cycling.  I'll need a TKR sometime in the next 10 years but I intend to try to avoid the knife until then

I'm sure if you search on HTO and OATS you'll find some feedback, but not much as they are two big surgeries not often done together
