Can't figure out my outer-knee problem...
« on: October 20, 2002, 01:02:39 AM »
Hi there, I'm new so I didn't know where to post this! I
can't seem to figure out what my problem is on my outer
knee? I usually run 3 times a week about 5kto7k each time.
I've never had problems in the past but now all of a sudden
this pain on the lateral/outer side of my knee.
Its strange cause after a run theres absolutely no
swelling. It hurts to the point to were I almost can't
walk. I've stretch regularly, strength train my quads &
Hams, change shoes often. I don't think its my iliotibial
band cause I stretch this to. Its just a pain on the
outer/lateral side of my knee, again theres no swelling
just when I rub my fingers on the outer part of the knee I
can feel pain/tendereness. After about 1-2 days of
resting/not running just doing regular everyday stuff the
pain is gone completely. It only comes on(pain) after a
run. I've seen an orthopedic doctor and he said it
tendinitous of the knee the and just put some heat on it
and rest for a 2-4 weeks. I did this religously and
nothing. Any advice, Information, or somebody with this
problem/experience would be appreciated. My Email address:

After you did what the Dr. wanted and it didn't work you need to go back and see what he says now. P.S.  A Sports Medicine OS who knows alot about knees might be good. Theresa.

Follow-up: I've seen two different physical therapist/sports doctors and they both told me its my Iliotibial band on my right knee, that with it being tight while I'm running it smacks my outer-bony knee. I've been through a training session with one and he says to stretch your ITBS. The thing is everything he showed me I've already been doing and I told him this and he wants me to return friday.
Am I wasting my time  and accept my almost incorrectable syndrome cause reading some facts about ITBS on this site and other resources says its difficult  to have any success in stretching the Iliotibial band?

I don't have this problem, but remember reading past posts about it. IT Band problems are very hard to deal with. Look back through some of the other posts, or search for IT Band, and you'll see what some other people are doing to deal with it. I would definitely see what the PT has to say on Friday. It's way too early to decide this is incorrectable. Good luck.
