Swelling on patella 18 days after ACL recon?
« on: January 09, 2018, 05:31:06 AM »

Did anyone experience swelling on the patella after an ACL reconstruction using a patellar autograft? Most of the swelling in my leg has gone down, except for the swelling in the patella. It seems to be in the space between the skin and the kneecap. I saw my surgeon a week ago and he said it will reabsorb (I didn't ask how long it would take), but I feel the area is just as swollen as right after the surgery. My next appointment is in about 4 weeks, and I'm wondering if this is something I might need to bring to my surgeon's attention before that or if its normal and I just need to keep elevating the leg!

I'd imagine the swelling will take at least a month to start to resolve, the knee has been pretty traumatised, and that area specifically due to the harvest. Get your physio to work on the area with gentle massage and ultrasound therapy. Elevate above the heart and ice a couple of times a day

Patience required, recovery a marathon not a sprint :)
