Nerve Pain after ACL Surgery!
« on: October 24, 2017, 04:23:57 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I had my ACL replaced (hamstring) on my right knee 2 weeks ago.

The knee seems to be improving and I have good flexion and I'm gaining almost full extension.

Unfortunately, I have had severe sharp shooting pains around my ankle and it feels uncomfortabke (like it's burning). Blankets feel painful on the inside of my ankle and the top of my shin. I have a small amount of numbness on my shin and I assume around my incision. I have seen my GP and he agrees it is probably nerve pain but it could be caused by the nerve being pinched while the knee is swollen. He's given me some strong anti-inflammatory medication but the pain has been getting worse and I ant sleep. I'm terrified that it may be nerve damage and that I may have to deal with this for years. Is there anyone else who had a similar experience and the pain just died down after a few weeks?

Please help :( I'm miserable!

Can you contact your surgeon? Nerves do get disrupted or cut during knee surgery, s/he should be able to tell you if this is normal or if you should see him/her. Numbness around surgical scars certainly isnít unusual, the nerves in the skin need to recover from being cut.

If your surgeon isnít available (email or call the secretary) , perhaps your Physio can offer more insight? They are more expert in post op rehab than GPs (assuming youíre in the UK)

2 weekís post op is extremely soon, everything in and around your knee and
Leg generally will be very raw and traumatised and needs time (months) to recover

Good luck

Hi! Unfortunately, I'm in Australia and I went through the public system here. Which means contacting the surgeon directly is difficult. Luckily I have my first post-op appointment in 2 days so I will mention it then.

I'm honestly terrified it's nerve damage. The knee itself is doing well but this pain is extreme. It just doesn't feel normal at all and it lines up directly with nerve pain.

2 days isnít long to wait. Try not to worry. If it is possibly a nerve issue as thebsurgeon if you need a referral to a pain specialist.

Most nerves do regenerate, keep a close eye for weird skin colour changes and perhaps avoid ice until you see the surgeon in case it is a nerve related complication.

2 weeks is very soon post op, itís likeky normal

Rhi, what did they say about the numbness? I had the same op as you (last Tuesday) and the inside of my leg between my ankle and knee is numb. I too get shooting/ripping pains down it. Usually when I try to sit down with my leg straight. When we're you able to bend your knee? I still am unable to ☹️ Steph

Hi Sec,

I only have a very small area of numbness around the incision which is very normal. I can bend my knee 145 and almost straighten (I'm about 3 degrees off). My symptoms have progressed considerably and no one know what is wrong with me. I'm currently on Lyrica which has calmed the symptoms in my ankle and shin but I have incredible tingling and burning in my toes which has now progressed to my ball of my foot (as well as the ball of my foot of my good  leg). I've had about 6 doctors and physio's look at me and everyone is clueless to what is happening. My surgeon told me he thought I had CRPS but I don't have any of the symptoms like swelling/temperature/colour changes. My motor skills are excellent and I have good strength in both legs. They've done pinprick tests and they've also come back excellent. It's all really bizarre. I'm running out of answers.

I am having the same exact issues. The nerve pain in my toes started about 30 days after my ACL surgery. Did you ever get this resolved?
