12 year old knee injury..? Is it a MCL or PCL?
« on: October 29, 2016, 10:54:33 PM »
Hi my Son Dan is an elite football (soccer) player. Training 3 times a week and playing  games 1-2 times a week. He broke down in training this week while jockeying another player due to pain in his left knee. He said it was when he planted his leg and turned. He fell to the ground and had to straighten his knee to stop the discomfort he did talk of a sound when it happened.
He couldn't complete his training session and we went home with ice on the knee.
The next day we visited his GP and he did some tests to check the 'looseness' of the knee and nothing was apparent saying he couldn't tell difference between legs... advice was to rest, take ibuprofen and give it a week and come back..
He hasn't suffered from any swelling or bruising and has been wearing a supportive brace from 4 days now.
I have been able to get him an appointment with private physio next week where I will be seeking a more detailed diagnosis.. and if required an MRI scan.
To start with he said he had pain on the outside of his knee (lateral collateral ligament area).
Could this be an MCL or PCL injury do u think? Has anyone else suffered similar symptoms?
Thanks in advance ..🤒

Could be many things, ask the physio to also test for meniscus tear, planted foot, twist, snap is a fairly common mechanism of injury. The physio should test everything thoroughly anyhow

I wasn't playing sport, and I'm rather older than your son, but I did something similar and my knee specialist reckons lateral meniscus and has referred me for MRI (I have lateral meniscus history and arthritis in the knee)

If he's an elite athlete, doesn't he have access to physio and specialists through the club?

Good luck
