4 months after Ruptured Patellar Tendon
« on: June 30, 2016, 04:53:05 PM »
Hi everyone  :) ,

I'm brand new to the forum. Wanted to see if anyone could help or experienced something similar.

I ruptured my left patellar tendon on Mother's day in the UK (6 March 2016, surgery on the next day) as you can imagine wasn't the best of mother's day gifts.

I've had pain on the outside of my knee from about the end of the middle/end of the 2nd month, at that point it wasn't a problem it would come and go. I put it down to residual pain from my patellar etc. In the last week or so it has got a lot worse, to the point of quite substantial pain if I try to lift my leg. I've had the checks with the surgeon for my ligaments, now been discharged from the fracture clinic. It's strange because I don't really have any pain in/on the front of my knee it's still swollen, but not painful.

Any help or tips would be hugely appreciated! :)

Hi Ladeyemi

Welcome to KneeGuru -

A pity that you have only just found this RPT thread - important that you read some of the previous posts on the forum - Ruptured Quadricep/Patella/surgery thread - then click on the undermentioned thread which contains various documents which I have prepared with KneeGuru.

How did you sustain your RPT injury?  Where do you live?  You do not mention if you are having physio?

PATIENCE is most important - you have sustained a very rare and serious injury.

ASK questions, we are here to help you

Hi JohnK,

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'll definitely check out some of the previous posts.

I was playing football, left leg stretching nicked the ball past the keeper, he wiped me out, heard a horrible pop and could see my kneecap trying to move up to my thigh and knew something was horribly wrong. I live in London. I'm currently undergoing physio, my first physio has left so I have a new one.

I've been very conscious of needing to be patient, when it comes to sport/training I'm the complete opposite but my surgeon/physio have explained how serious it is, so that's tempered my impatience. Generally it's all going quite well so far. This pain on the outside of my knee is my only real issue so far, everything else seems to be due to lack of strength/muscle.

Hi Ladeyemi

On your next visit to the physio, have your bad leg and good leg  measured to establish your current ROM   range of movement.

Ask your PT " has he/she seen this type of injury before?"   ( doubt it)

Take care on walking on wet surfaces.

Hi JohnK,

I'm back up to full range of movement (been there for a little while now), I had the test with my first physio, he seemed very knowledgeable. I've only had one session with the new physio, who added some additional work and some progressions from previous set of exercies. Will ask my new physio when I see him next if he's worked on an injury like this before.

A further tip for you to think about --

purchase a floor cycle from Amazon - costs about 35 0r $50 - then sit down in your favourite chair and pedal away - it`s brilliant.

p.s.  and have a look at Ruptured Quadricep/Patella tendon/surgery, the main KneeGuru web page for RPT patients.
