Best surgeon for ACL *revision* in London
« on: May 13, 2016, 11:58:15 AM »
Hi all,

I have had two ACL reconstructions (incl. one revision) after two failures.

Very sadly, my second graft failed a few weeks ago, leading to a complete tear. Does anyone have advice on the best surgeon/specialist to see regarding ACL revisions in London? My GP has kindly said he will refer me to a surgeon of my choice (NHS) - I would like to opt for Andrew Davies at Guys and St Thomas but I'm not sure he still does NHS work.

Would be great to hear people's thoughts.

Best wishes!

Max

Andy Williams at Chelsea & Westminster has a very good reputation, but very long wait lists to go with it

I've also heard positive things about Jonathan Lavelle

The other top guy is Jonathan Bell but private only, which is presumably out of the question?

I think Andrew Davies repaired a friends ACL a few years back, but privately

You might also wish to discuss with your previous surgeon and get his rocommendation? Is there a reason why you wish to change? Do you know why the other grafts have failed?

South West London Elective Othropedic Center @ Epsom has a stellar reputation for all things orthopedic - I'm in the process of arranging my acl reconstruction  there.

My knee surgeon is one of their senior guys, but I don't know how many ACL reconstructions he does, but definitely recommended. Been patching me up for over 6 years now (albeit via private healthcare)

He does circa 600 operation per year. Around 70 ACL.  Can't fid source for that at the moment, found it when researching him

Sounds like it might be the same surgeon :) similar info on the private hospital website

Knee Replacement 220 per year
Cruciate ligament Surgery 70 per year
Arthroscopy 250 per year

If it is the same surgeon, you are in very good hands :)

With 2 failures behind you, you need a revision specialist. The best in London by reputation is Jonathan Bell at the Wimbledon Clinic. Jon Webb also has a good reputation but he splits his time between London and Bristol

Please ex :o 8) 8) :o ::) cuse any typos but sadly I've lost nearly all my sight due to a rather large brain tumour (christened my Alienbrain   8) 8) :'( :'(

Bells reputation is indeed excellent but he only does private work these days. OP seeks NHS options, and his prices are at the upper end (or so my self pay researches told me)

He does also do some pro bono work on cases that Peak his interest, as well as work together with an excellent team of physics ( his wife s a specialist physio as well. An initial consultation maybe all that is needed. His fees are not what I would call exorbitant by any means, and repayment plans can be drawn up that are affordable even without private insurance

Someone I know checked ACLr prices for Bell at Parkside. Around 10k versus 5-6k for my surgeon who will be doing the op later in the year on the NHS

That said, if looking at a 3rd recon rather than 1st, I'd want to know whether Bell can guarantee the outcome. We don't know why the first two failed? Suboptimal surgery or suboptimal rehab/rushed back to impact sports say or bad luck?

I don't think the OP has been back since posting?

Fwiw Andrew Davies London Bridge hospital profile suggests he still works out of Guys. Drop him a line

Thanks very much all! Clear consensus for Jonathan Bell, but I'm not insured and paid for my first reconstruction privately so would prefer to avoid that route this time.

I took a year out and with extensive physio after the first operation, and then a year and a half with physio/running etc after the second. I love playing football and have torn it playing football on each occasion. So it's been bad luck I think. What has been quite fortunate is that there has been limited damage to other areas of the knee on each occasion.

I also have very large legs with very heavy bones so I don't think this helps?

What I'm going to do is ask to be referred to my previous surgeon at Guys. Hopefully he's still there and then he'll be able to work round his previous job. I know that he didn't alter the tunnels or anything else from the very first surgery.

Hi

I have a similar story to yours.I am also tall.
Torn my ACL Twice and now recovering from ACL revision.
Same like you after first op 12 months of good and strong rehab. Played tennis for two months but went to play First game in football and bang re-tear it again when running and tried to cross the ball.

I had my surgeries in London with http://www.davidsweetnam.com/
He did second time patellar tendon with MAC technique (take little bit of quad and for better support for the knee)

I am 7 months post-op all is going well no pain etc. The only thing is what I am afraid is that my knee joint is still very weak / wobbly.  My PT is saying ACL is tight and I need to work on building muscles. I have almost same size of my operated leg compare to healthy leg  but wobbly joint is still there.
I  assume that this time it is taking longer to get back my strength of the knee joint

Quick follow-up, my previous surgeon (Andrew Davies) has stopped doing NHS work, so I've asked to be referred to Andy Williams as C&W is near me, and he sounds very good. Thanks for your suggestion Vickster
