Help! Concerned daughter!
« on: February 21, 2004, 02:43:05 AM »
My mother (61 years old) had knee replacement
surgery Dec. 7, 2002 on her right knee.
After a week in rehab, they sent her
home. However, she was still unable
to walk. She used a walker as best she
could. She was going to therapy 3x per
week with no signs of improvement after
several weeks. Her OS said she had peroneal
nerve damage with a dropped foot. She
then had surgery on the peroneal
nerve. A week later (still unable to
walk), she fell at home and broke her
fibula on her right leg and her right
wrist. She is a widow home alone, therefore,
they admitted her into the hospital
Jan. 28 to help care for her. Another
OS told her she should have been prescribed
a brace with her dropped foot - it wasn't
surprising to him that she fell. She
has been in the hospital for the last
3 1/2 weeks. She is doing therapy at
the rehab unit at the hospital - however,
is limited to what she can do. She is
currently using a platform walker and
is not allowed to put any pressure on
her right leg. They plan on sending
her home next week. I don't believe
she can manage due to the fact she cannot
walk....only hop on her left leg. She
still has no feeling in her dropped
foot. In fact, it remains very painful.
The OS has been  uninformative on her
                     condition. I am extremely concerned
with her condition. Is there any kind
of prognosis given to patients in this
condition? She is not getting any better.
Would you reccommend she see another
OS for a 2nd opinion? What are other's
                     experiences with the peroneal nerve
                     damage? Help! -concerned daughter  :P

Oh, kkh!

This must be so stressful for you and your mother!

I have no experience in the nerve damage arena, but I do have some experience at advocating for an ill parent. Your mother will probably qualify for some other type of long term care after she leaves the hospital rehab unit. Be sure to request help from a hospital social worker several days BEFORE she is to leave the hospital.

At 61 your Mom is really young for it, but she could even go to a nursing home temporarily until she makes more progress in therapy. Short term patients in good nursing homes tend to get lots of attention--more therapy time than if a therapist were making home visits--because they are a ray of light for the therapists and all workers in nursing homes. Of course, your Mom is probably going to want to go home, and you will need some lead time to get things properly arranged--so talk to the social worker soon to get things started.

Hi , I myself from a football tacke damaged my knee totally , the artery was damaged in knee so immediate surgery was required . Also my peroneal nerve was damaged which has resulted in footdrop and no feeling .
I myself would like a second opinion. I have removeable plaster cast but feel there must be footdrop braces availabe.
Unlike your mum i have age on my side ( age 30 so i am told ) it must be tough for her as i know how hard it is for me
