Could this be a meniscus tear?
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:37:37 AM »
About 6 months ago I was squatting down at work when my knee locked (I honestly thought it had discolated) the pain was excruciating and it knocked me onto my back, within a few minutes I tried to straighten my leg and it clicked back in with a thunk. I had really bad swelling and tenderness for about a week then things started to feel better. Since then the same thing has happened about 5 more times and my knee has become to feel unstable. I don't have bad pain when I walk but when I'm in bed at night I have a dull ache and I have pain across the knee when touched especially in the lateral side.
I finally gave in and went to see the doctor and have an appointment for an MRI on the the 25th of this month.
It's stopping me from doing the things I enjoy as when it locks up not only is it really painful it's very embarrassing too.
My doctor wasn't very helpful and I got the impression she thought I was exaggerating!
Anyone else have a similar experience?
Thanks

Yes it could be a meniscus tear or a myriad other things. Get the MRI done and then try to see an orthopaedic specialist depending on the report. Be aware that meniscus tears can be easily missed on MRIs or not show up so you need a specialist to do specific manual tests on the knee along with taking a detailed history

Good luck

Thank you for you reply.
I guess I'm just a little nervous that nothing will show up and I'm not taken seriously. I have already had OA in my toes and had joints removed so I'm nervous about what they will find ( or not!)

It could be, the MRI should show cartilage issues, the locking could be caused by a loose body floating around getting periodically trapped in the joint space as much as a meniscus flap could be doing the same

Hopefully the scan will show something :)
