HEART BREAK
« on: February 14, 2004, 09:33:33 PM »
hi, i'm a newbie on this site.  i have jst turned 17 and have had knee trouble since last may! I landed akwardly playing football and things haven't been the same since. The surgeon initially thought i had trapped cartilage which was the reason my leg was locked. he then did keyhole to remove it. however when they got inside they realised there was nothing wrong with it. But my leg regained a lot of mobility. i then tried to get running again but the knee kept giving way. my dad got really worried and took me to a private specialist who had a quick look and told me i had a torn acl. he got me seen again by my local gp. so the gp started me on physio again. The dr finally reffered me for a MRI. i waited 4 months for this!! When it came in the surgeon told me that my ACL is now totally ripped in two and my cartillage must have been hurt when it went from torn to knackered.  The surgeon says i should start exercising again to see what category i fall into. So he can think of reconstruction. Jokingly i asked if i should start to play football again, and he said yes. He is going to get a friend who specialises in sport injuries to the ACL to look at me. but till then i am to exercise and get intense physio.  I am no expert on this but the thought of my leg giving way again makes me physically sick. Has anyone heard this advice being given before? Gareth

Gareth-

Hi, I am a former D1 soccer player and I am now an athletic trainer.  If you look at my signature I have had ACL problems amoung other things.  I am also in limbo with my ACL tear, I'm waiting to see a specialist on monday to decide how to go about reconstruction.

Not that this is something I normally suggest, but you may have grounds for a lawsuit aganst the surgeon who did your surgery.  Arthroscopic surgery is the ultimate diagnostic tool, and to miss an ACL tear is a very serious mistake.

Rehab isn't going to hurt, but you really can't get that aggressive at this point exspecially since you already have cartilage damage.  You shouldn't be playing until your knee is reconstructed.

Has anyone suggest getting a derotational brace?  These are good for controlling an unstable knee under low load activities such as would occur with normal everyday use.  If your have a great deal of instability you could also try a rehab brace.

I know the feeling about the knee giving way.  My knee has started to dislocate, last time it did it my boyfriend (who is also an ATC) had to reduce it for me because it wouldn't go back into proper postition.

If you have any other questions I encourage you to contact me directly through e-mail (look at my profile for address)

Best of luck to you!
