Partial Knee Replacement surgery advice.
« on: March 21, 2015, 09:49:14 PM »
Hi I'm 43 yrs old and have many arthroscopy operations over ther years.  The time has come to have a PKR as my arthritis is deteriating,  my MRI scan shows a cyst in the knee, fluid and blood leaking into the bone.  I am having surgery around June 2015 time.  Am looking for any advice pre surgery and after surgery I've heard that i might have a drain in the knee after sugrey and not sure how long this stays in for. Obviously I am bit anxious about the whole thing as any advice no matter how small would be greatly appreciated, recovery time, length in hospital, pain etc.   Thank you.

I'm in a similar position.

Am waiting on a second opinion to determine whether a patellofemoral joint replacement is my best option.

Usually a drain is only in for about a day or so until the excess blood has drained.

My advice would be to get leg as strong as possible pre-op, take pain meds on schedule at least initially after surgery.  Ice and elevation are your friends (intermittent icing).  If you will spend time alone, a water bottle with handle helps you stay hydrated (as you can carry it while still using both crutches).  Pillows for the ride home from hospital make it a lot nicer.  Do your physical therapy and never stop -it is a lifelong deal afterwards if you want best outcome.  Work as hard as you can to regain range of motion once MD says you may -ask if he/she doesn't say when you may start those exercises.  Ask any question that comes to mind of your doc and physical therapist -don't be shy.

Best of luck to you both!!  Cheers-A
