What do you do if a doctor doesn't take your pain seriously
« on: January 10, 2015, 02:39:52 PM »
Since I was 11, I had these bony bumps under my knees, but I never had it diagnosed. Recently I have been having a lot of pain in my knees and legs, which is getting worse. I looked up the symptoms and I believe I may have Osgood Schlatter Disease. I went to the ER last night and the doctor said I was a perfectly healthy young adult and to just take an ibuprofen until the pain goes away.

I don't know how to have somebody listen to me and take my pain seriously. I feel really frustrated and don't know what I should do or say. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation and how did you deal with it?
I feel I know my body better than anyone else and it's frustrating to have someone tell me there's nothing wrong.

You'd be best off going to see an orthopaedic doctor specialising in knees, rather than a generalist in the ER who specialises in trauma rather than chronic issues like yours. That doctor will be able to do a proper examination and any I ageing like x rays  It may also be helpful for that specialist to refer your for physiotherapy for exercises to help with the pain and any weakness

How old are you? That might be a paediatric specialist or an an adult specialist depending on your age.

Get a friend or family member to go with you to also explain how you are feeling

Good luck :)

I agree with Vickster...

The ER should only be the first place to go if you want to be rushed out... unless you go in all broken in an ambulance you get sent home...

You need to find an OS in your area to run a proper analysis.
