 :-\

I am a 45 yr old mother of three.  I used to do competitive gymnastics and was always very athletic up until college when I injured my right knee.  I had ACL surgery back then and have had some issues, but its not given me any problems recently.

Onto the LEFT knee.  A Couple of years ago I was told that I had a torn ACL and Meniscus and it was apparently an old injury because I do not specifically remember when this injury happened.  It just got more unstable and it would pop out of place when I'd accidentally bump it against the couch, etc.  I'm always trying to speed around the house picking up after the kids, etc.

In August of 2013, A prominent Boston doctor performed ACL Reconstruction (Allograft) and also repaired a torn Meniscus .  All seemed good until recently.  Knee hasn't felt perfect but due to a new insurance policy, I can't go back to that Boston doctor.

I did some serious knee bending a month ago while painting/sealing the grout on my kitchen floor.  I wore knee pads but it seemed to have caused something new.  What happens is that every time I bend my left knee, it feels as if it has locked in a bad position and hurts really bad until I hyper-extend the knee and wait for it to "Pop" back into place (I can actually feel it) and then the pain subsides.

It's getting to the point where I am in constant pain and I when I try to hyper-extend, I am not sure whether it has popped back or not because it's always hurting.  In the beginning the pain stopped as soon as I felt the pop upon hyper-extension, but now it's DEBILITATING. :-(

I am looking for answers here - any helpful info would be great.

Thanks so much in advance!!

You need to see a specialist, but to me (based only on my own experiences of similar events) it sounds like a meniscus problem. If the knee is locking it could be that something is physically blocking the movement and that forcing it until it pops does not sound a good idea. The longer you leave it the worse it gets and that in the long term is not good for your knee. If they do have to trim any damaged meniscus, they only shave minuscule amounts off until the damaged sections are removed. Specialists try to retain as much as possible these days.

None of us here are doctors, just patients and we share our experience and the knowledge we acquired in the process.

Thanks for your reply. I am in the process of making an appointment with a new surgeon; hopefully they can help. Wow, skiing, that's so awesome! I loved all kinds of sports before the darn knee problems.
