Advice please...acute but transient knee pain
« on: February 17, 2004, 10:13:37 PM »
???Hi there. I've been to the doctor...going to take months before I can see a specialist. Was hoping someone may help me narrow down the potential problems in the meantime.

Apologies in advance for the summary note style. I wrote a longer narrative account but lost it whilst previewing (yeah!)

40 y.o. man. Not unfit but not particularly sporty. No previous knee injuries that I know of. No other joint problems (apart from an unproblematic 'clicky' elbow).

Onset: Sudden, last few weeks.

Brief history and description:
Got up in the night. Left knee felt as if something had become dislocated. Extreme pain for few seconds; seemed to correct itself within a minute or two after bit of manipulation. Now happens 3 or 4 times a day. Sometimes happens when not weight bearing (even horizontally in bed), although usually involves lateral movement or slight twisting.

No swelling or permanent pain. Can walk in straight line no problem. Pain and sensation is always on the inside of knee. Feels like something has come out of place or alignment... only then am I unable to walk until its back 'in place'; usually within minutes of twisting my leg a bit. It seems to be ok for hours, but then takes me by surprise. Has stopped me going walking and cycling now.

Previously same knee clicked (more of a crack really) when standing up after squatting. This was never particularly painful, although it did appear to be getting worse. I can now bring on the 'dislocation' sensation by squatting or kneeling down (not that I want to!), but takes longer to get back in place.

Have tried some basic web sites but nothing seems to fit the bill. Would really appreciate comments on what it might be. I know I need to see a specialist, but this is going to take time and I'd rather be educated about it in the meantime.

Please let me know what other info I could include iof the above isn't enough.
Thanks  :)

Hi Andy

Sorry to hear of your knee problems.  It could be many things that are causing the pain but a lot of what you are describing sounds very familiar to me.  I had severe maltracking of the patella (when your patella slips slightly out of its normal track), sounds like you might be getting some subluxing (when kneecap slips out only slightly and then goes back in either by itself or with some gentle manipulation).  Have you tried wearing a knee brace?  It may be worthwhile looking into getting a brace until your appointment comes through, it might just give you a bit of stability.  As I said, it could be many different things that are causing this, as you have probably realised by reading all the different postings, knees are very complicated things, so I wouldn't like to give you any wrong or harmful information as I'm not a doctor.  Have a look on the main guru page at the steps to enlightenment and you might find some more useful information.  As you said this is happening 3-4 times a day, would it be a possibility to call up the OS and ask for a cancellation appointment?  Might be worth a try.  Good luck, hope you get some answers soon.  Let us know how you go.
