New to site.. Injured knee.. Any opinions?
« on: October 23, 2014, 05:22:40 PM »
Okay so a week ago (friday) I hurt my right knee.
I was on a horse bareback and going to try to help a little girl on another horse.. Who's saddle had slid side way. I brought my horse to hers and was gonna put my foot in the stirrup and put weight on it to shift her saddle.
When I did so, I felt a pop. It was a hard pop from inside the knee followed by a sharp sharp line of pain from top to bottom of the knee (about 5 inches?) behind the knee cap towards the out side.
Pain lasted about a minute then subsided.. I rode about an hour when I hopped off the horse my knee gave way and the super sharp pain was back.
Felt it when I walk too but not as much like maybe a 3 or 4 on the pain scale.
About a 7when I walk up or down stairs.
And good 8.5 whwn I get out of the car.
It's that same sharp pain.

Now I also have a tenderness to the touch on the outside of my knee cap and outside of the knee. And a dull throbing pain.

I went home wrapped it good iced it and elevated it. For a few hours.

This morning it was more swollen on the outside and underneath of the knee cap where it's sore.

Same pain same amount. When I move a certain way it's BAD.

I went to er they did xray asked a few questions.. Never even touched my leg and only had me sit criss cross.
Gave me prednisone.

Said just sprained it.

Now when I got home to get into the tub/shower rhe pain came back and knee gave way..

If I lunge to the left or right I feel very unstable on my hurt knee and it feels like a small sharp pain inside back of knee.

Same pain and everything on Sunday and money but swelling went down due to medicine.

Tuesday I went to different hospital. The Dr then moved my leg all around asked questions and said I had a positive McMurray test.
That I needed an mri.

Waiting on Dr apt for ortho now.

But recently (yesterday) I started feeling like my leg has been hyper extending when I walk with each step. And a catching feeling every now and then.. Will last about 20-30 steps then go away.

Then last night (Thursday night) I had a long drive (2hours) and my knee was in excruciating pain to keep it bent and not moving really. I had to stop a few time just to get out and walk around.
The pain was mostly felt inside the knee to towards the Inside of the leg right aboce the knee cap? As well as the exact opposite (outside of the leg bottom of knee cap) still inside the knee joint.

And this morning I felt a lot more catching when walking or grinding when barely moving my knee.
And alot if throbing pain.

Any ideas?

I feel like it's getting worse..

Hi Lauren:  Sorry about your injury.   The symptoms your are describing suggests a meniscus tear.
The pain, swelling, giving out, catching and especially a positive McMurray test.   At the time I had a meniscus tear, I had a lot of throbbing pain in the back of the knee that would wake me up every night.   The only thing that will help right now is resting, icing ,elevating, try the elastic sleeve, and anti-inflammatories as much as you can. If you don't need surgery perhaps some physical therapy.   I certainly would not do any horseback riding until advised by the OS or physical therapist.  I would be very surprised if on MRI findings that anything short of a meniscus tear showed up.

Good golly, I am not a doctor but from everything I have read on this site and from personal experience it sounds like a classic textbook meniscus tear and not a sprain!  Let us know the results. Best of Luck; LAS

Lauren,

take it easy until you get a proper diagnosis!

Several things you mention set the alarm bells ringing in my mind reminding me of my experience:
  • loud pop as you loaded the knee in an awkward position
  • leg giving way as soon as you tried to stand on it
  • pain on weight-bearing
  • a feeling that the knee is hyper-extending when walking

To me those are all signs of having a compromised ACL type injury. These are often "diagnosed" by ER doctors as knee sprains, so the sooner you can get to see an orthopaedic specialist the better.

As LAS says, the blocking of the movement is indicative of a meniscus tear. So you really do need to have someone knowledgeable about knees have a look at this immediately if you are going to restrict any damage to the minimum.

I hope I'm wrong but until a real specialist looks and tests the knee, you must take things easy and use crutches if at all possible to spare yourself the pain as well as to take some of the weight off it.

Good luck

I've been reading about the meniscus tears and it definitely sounds like that.. :/

What suggest acl?

And what does hyper extending the knee mean?

Is a meniscus tear home treatable or surgery most times?

If the knee is unstable or locked (i.e. won't straighten), often it means that there is a part of the meniscus stuck in the joint and usually this will need surgery.  The fact it's getting worse isn't a great sign

There's a good meniscus primer in the information hub to explain about the different types of tears

Kaputt_knee can explain about the ACL better than anyone on here :) (and again there's a primer)

You should definitely stay off the leg as much as possible, no lunging for example :)  PRICE - Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation

I have had it wrapped the whole time. Elevated and iced still. I'm on neprexon and ibuprofen.

Last night it was pretty bad, more of a throbbing.. Was hurting worse yesterday.
Then I went to pick something up and moved my knee and the sharp pain was back made me stand back up turned and when I turned it gave out and was as painful as the first time..
Took my breath away pain (and I delivered 2 kids naturally! To say it hurt... It hurt!)

I've been off of it since then.. Waiting on Dr apt.

Did the doctor prescribe naproxen and ibuprofen?  Normally, you shouldn't take two non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs together (as they can both cause stomach issues, similarly no aspirin).  If not prescribed, you should stop one and start acetominophen assuming you are ok to take it

Good luck :)

That would be best, acetominophen (paracetamol) is fine but no more than 2 x 500mg every 4-6 hours (8 in 24).  It's a better painkiller I think, the naproxen is more for inflammation / swelling :)  Ice should help with pain too (but no more than 15 mins every couple of hours, always wrapped in a cloth)

My meniscus tear got worse over the course of 5 months with physio and then I needed surgery.  Pain may subside as the trauma and inflammation lessens.  Unfortunately, knee injuries take a long time to heal, with or without surgery

When do you see the orthopaedic surgeon?

Hi Lauren:  Meniscus tears most of the time as painful as yours needs surgery.  It's hard to tell without the proper tests. I had a lot of pain with a meniscus tear but could at least stand on it.   The only experience I have had with the ACL was a strain which was very painful at times but tolerable in between.
If  you have a torn ACL and meniscus tear it will probably show up on MRI.  A McMurray test and  (laxity test for ACL)  can be negative on examination with injuries but not probable.  Most of the time a good OS can detect a meniscus tear and ACL injury.   If the ER doctor didn't even touch your knee, how would you get a correct diagnosis?  Kaputt_Knee does has much more experience with the ACL and her advice should be well taken.  If your knee is wobbly, that could suggest ACL.   Glad to hear you saw the 2nd Dr.  The the OS will have the answers.  Hopefully you will not have to wait too long.   Best of Luck;
LAS

So I forgot to ask..
When I bend my knee I feel a quiet pop each time and constant creaking /grinding..
What is that?
