PRP treatment
« on: September 03, 2014, 01:15:19 PM »
Has anyone hear had PRP treatment? Has it helped your condition at all?
I saw a sports specialist yesterday, I am 41 and he tells me I have knees of an 80yr old. But wants to try all conservative treatment as I am considered too young for a knee replacement (which eventually I will need). I managed to get a sterioid injection in hope to start easing my pain as the drugs I am currently taking aren't doing anything.  The next thing he wants to try is Platelet-Rich Plasma. I would like to try and find out more about it. Thank you.

I've had PRP for elbow tendonitis, too late and didn't help (just hurt a lot!).  For PRP to have an effect on knees, you probably need multiple injections (my OS doesn't believe the evidence is there for articular cartilage, only soft tissue inflammation in tendons and the like, but he is quite conservative)

I have some cartilage issues in my knee (presumably arthritis is also your issue) and I find hyaluronic acid injections have helped me which are indicated for arthritis, helping inflammation and lubricating the joint.  I have been having these every 18 months or so since Dec 2010 (I'm 42 now)

If you look in the 'injections into the joint' section, there are posts there.  Also search for posts by MDAL who has had success with PRP but a lot of injections (a dozen or more I think) which depending where you live could get very expensive

Good luck :)

Worked amazingly for me (slightly younger than you), but after a long series. It also depends on what start point you begin... if you are totally bone on bone on large extensions, it might not work so great.

Thank you for your replies MDAL and Vickster, and enlightened me on some issues. I have high grade chondromalacia, bone on bone. Which scares the cr#p out of me.
I will ask home about the hyaluronic acid injections as well. Thanks Vickster on the other sections to look up relevant info.
