I don't know what's wrong with my knee.
« on: August 06, 2014, 12:03:19 PM »
My knee started hurting almost 12 weeks ago. I believe I hurt it from jumping while exercising. I hate myself for causing this!

I am unsure what's wrong. The pain changes location, but I would say the worst in the inner side. My knee feels stiff/tight. It seems to have full range of motion, but bending it all the way hurts. I can walk, although bearing weight causes more discomfort.

It clicks a lot when I straighten it all the way. The clicking isn't painful, but it doesn't feel "right".

I am feeling depressed because I miss exercising, and I miss being pain free. I am a healthy 25 year old female (5'2 and 100 lbs).

Does anyone have any guesses of that is happening with my knee? The xray and examination didn't show anything abnormal. There is no visible swelling.

An X ray will only show bony issues, not anything that may be up with the soft tissue.  Your next step should be to request an MRI and an appointment with a knee specialist.  I could be inflammation or damage to ligaments, tendon, meniscus or the bone marrow (i.e. a bone bruise) on or cartilage on the bone (which would not necessarily show on an X ray)

In terms of exercising, you may find swimming or light indoor cycling helpful.  Just steer clear of lunges, squats.  Ice the knee, elevate it and avoid activities that cause pain or irritation

Good luck getting a diagnosis.  In the meantime, have look through the primers in the information hub :)

Hi Chelsea,

I understand how frustrating knee pain be, especially at 25. Vickster is definitely righ that x rays do not show all the stuff going on in your knees. I have been going through some mystery knee pain the past few years, but most specifically the past 3 months as well, so hopefully anything I have come across in the past three months can be helpful.

A couple questions- what kind of jumping were you doing, was it a type of twisting motion or just straight up and down? Can you describe anything else about the clicking? What part of the inside of the knee, on the kneecap, below or above the kneecap?

Disclaimer, I am definitely not an expert, but nevertheless, dealing with super depressing and annoying knee pain the past three months, I empathize and would be thrilled to help if I could.

Thanks for the replies. I see the doctor next week, so I hope he will give me an MRI. Last month, he did give me an anti-inflammatory and told me to ice, but neither have been working.

I believe I hurt myself my doing a jump move where I brought my knees up (so my quads where parallel to the ground). The clicking happens where up knee is bent and I fully extend it. Sometimes it's a quiet click, but other times it's loud. It will once every time it does it, but it can do it several times in a row if I bend and straighten my leg.

Many different parts of my knee seem to be affected. My entire knee feels tight. Sometimes I have a dull pain on the outside part below the knee cap, and sometimes I have a sharper pain on the inside  part running down the length of my kneecap. My calf sometimes feels so tight too, and my quads will ache (usually after having to walk for long periods).

I wish I could get better!

Bummer. I am definitely sorry to hear about your pain. I hope the MRI clears things up. Good luck.

Hi:  Don't get depressed.   Your young and at a good weight.  You have that on your side.  Whatever it is can be fixed and you will get better.   The only thing I would add is that  get your knee to a point that you have little or no pain by resting, icing, etc. before you do any exercises.  Then go back to it slowly or until you see the Dr. next week.   Of course as Vickster said don't do anything that causes pain.  You don't want to cause any further damage.   If I was 25 years old and 100 lbs, my knee problems would be next to none.   Age and weight have a lot to do with it.   Maybe you could try some upper body workouts, sitting down of course.   I would just be real easy on the knee.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.  LAS
