Brace for martial arts/wrestling?
« on: December 20, 2003, 09:40:29 AM »
Could anyone recommend a brace suitable for contact sports-I do jiu jitsu which is like judo and wrestling--just recovering from a torn meniscus...

you might want to dig through this other board, I saw some references that might be helpful. You'll have to do some digging, but I believe they've mentioned the subject of bracing and marital arts.

you really shouldn't need anything more than a knee sleeve.  Braces are not normally perscribed at a mensicus surgery because they just don't have any effect.
1999 LR, 2002 ACL/PLC recon, reversal of LR, 2004 ACL revision, 2006 Car accident torn PCL and small fractures resulting in bone chips in my knee.  Torn MCL 3 times.  Wicked screws under IT band and Pes Anserine.  June 2008-Hip Arthroscopy.

I did Tae Kwon Do and Judo for a long time.  What my doc told me when I asked him the same question is that for the types of movement (twisting, etc.) involved in martial arts a brace doesn't really help much.  A neoprene sleeve may help swelling and proprioception (reminds your brain where your knee is in space).

Good luck 8)
