What Does It Mean If Patella Does Not Move Up/Down
« on: February 04, 2004, 07:16:48 PM »
Hey All,

My patella does not move much up and down when trying to do mobes. :o I can get it to move side to side alright. Is this serious? Or will it come in time? Could it be because I have not got my full extension back yet? I continue to see some good progress in ROM. It has been painful getting it , though. :P

Thankful for your thoughts ;D

Christina ;)

Do you still have alot of Swelling Christina, it could be that your knee cap is just kind of caught up in the swelling etc.  Are you trying to move it with your leg relaxed and straight? That's the only way my patella will move.
Just a thought

Hey Christina,

Sometimes the patella not moving is from scar tissue.  Sometimes its just the way your body is made.  Being able to extend all the way helps though.  My patella has never really moved up and down, even before I had surgery the first time.  It may have something to do with an overly tight patellar tendon, which incidentally, my OS thinks may be a predisposing factor for tendonitis.  (By the way, thanks for the advice about that, I'm going to give massage a try!)

Hey Christina,

My right knee (the one I had the surgery on) doesn't move much up & down either (esp. compared to the left knee).  The swelling I've got is mostly in a distal-lateral bulge.  Sometimes I admit that I wonder if the patellar ligament & quads just pull it really tight post-surgery. I'm pretty sure it's scar tissue, though.  I find heat & massage help to get the whole area moving.

The most common cause is when the fad pad scars down normally from arthoscopic portals.  When I had my knee scoped in november I had it happen, but it soon resolved with aggressive patellar mobs.
1999 LR, 2002 ACL/PLC recon, reversal of LR, 2004 ACL revision, 2006 Car accident torn PCL and small fractures resulting in bone chips in my knee.  Torn MCL 3 times.  Wicked screws under IT band and Pes Anserine.  June 2008-Hip Arthroscopy.

Danielle, Marie and ATSoccergirl,

Thank you for your input. :D I am hoping it is not scar tissue and if it is that I can still work with it (4 1/2 weeks post op). I dont want to have another surgery. :o .

I will try to use heat and more massage to see if it helps.

I did have my fat pad removed and a lateral release last surgery. I had scar tissue scarring down my patella to the patellar tendon to the fat pad and tibia. The whole thing was completely scarred down. The OS said he removed a big clump of scar tissue. :P

Thanks again guys ;D

Hugs and blessings all around ;)
