My Arthrofibrosis story....more surgery?
« on: April 16, 2014, 07:03:10 AM »
Hi all,

I suffered a major knee injury (and a broken femur, tibia, fibula, ankle and a ruptured spleen and kidney) when I was hit on my motorcycle by a drunk driver when I was 17 (Iím now 46).  They had to rebuild my knee at that time.  After many surgeries to clean up the knee and after trying everything else available (shots, aggressive PT, etc.) I had a TKR in October í08.  I struggled to regain my ROM right after the surgery.  My knee was very stiff and very painful and I was stuck at 90 degrees flexion with limited extension (+10).  This was very frustrating because I didnít have an issue with my ROM before the TKR and I didnít even realize it was a possible outcome.  I had open surgery 2 Ĺ years later by the same OS to remove a lot of scar tissue and change out the spacer to a smaller one, but it was a short term fix, even though I started PT the day of the surgery and we pushed it hard.

Fast forward to present and Iím stuck at 95 degrees flex with limited extension (+15) with constant pain and stiffness again.  This battle with Arthrofibrosis has dramatically changed my life and itís a daily struggleÖ.one that I feel like Iím losing.  I am so glad that I found this website - I now know that Iím not alone!  Thank you!

I need to decide if I should go in for another surgery and I'd like to open it up for discussion with all of you that truly understand this evil thing called Arthrofibrosis and are battling it daily.  I've met with two Arthrofibrosis specialists in Vail, CO (Dr. Sterret and Dr. LaPrade) and they both want to do the same procedure.  They are proposing arthroscopy with manipulation under anesthesia and posterior capsular release.  The surgery will be followed up immediately with twice daily PT stating in Vail and then the same when I return home.  They feel they can get me to 115 degrees flexion and although they say the increase in extension is much harder to achieve, they feel they can definitely help.  To be honest, it's the last thing I want to do, but I can't live like this any longer.  It's just too draining!!  Please feel free to share your thoughts....

Thank you!!

Hi RLee

You should be in good hands with either one of those doctors, since Laprade is part of Steadman's group and Dr Sterret did his fellowship under Steadman and was once part of their group. The rehab protocal is just as important as the surgery. You will be under the care of PTs, who are trained in the specialized PT for arthrofibrosis. Hopefully they will be removing scar tissue first, before performing the manipulation. Arthrofibrosis is very hard to recover from. It is a very slow process that requires patience and dedication to rehab. Don't be discouraged if you experience a setback or two along the way, it's not uncommon when one is dealing with arthrofibrosis.

In case you did not see this information, here is the link to the arthrofibrosis resources. Start by paging down to read Dr Noyes 12 part tutorial on arthrofibrosis:

did you end up having the capsular release surgery?
