Ruptured patellar tendon then broken patellar
« on: July 11, 2015, 09:32:45 AM »
So July 14th I tore my patellar tendon playing basketball got bumped on a layup dislocated my knee and tore the tendon, July 18th 2014 I had surgery to repair a fully torn tendon which also pulled off some bone. Surgery was a success started physio six weeks later, had a checkup with my specialist in October which we found out the accessory hardware holding my tendon from tearing actually tore my patellar apart, so kept with physio and had another surgery January 21st 2015 which was to remove old accessory and put in a new wire to hold my patellar together, early march got the go ahead that it was all fully healed and now I have surgery on the 16th to remove the accessory wire.

Just wanted to ask, what is the time on a recovery for removal of the wire?
I have decent range of motion in the knee and strength is coming back, Im only 23 years old fairly active and fit go to the gym regularly, there is a lot of atrophy in the quad but Im confident in regaining the muscle n the next few years. I work as a plumber so being out of work for a year has been very tough just looking to get back to work. Any helps appreciated thanks!!

1-2 days post op no real pain besides the cuts on the knee, just some stinging pain when the bandaging rubs. Got both k1 wires out of my knee, see the gp in a week and the specialist in 2 weeks to remove sutures. So far so good, after removal of wires, when can you take the bandaging off or start walking normal.

Having the wire removed is a piece of cake compared to the original surgery.  I had a general anaesthetic which made me sleepy for a few days, and my leg was swollen and bruised from the surgery but I could walk quite easily.  They opened up the bottom 2 inches or so of my original scar so that felt a bit like a giant paper cut and didn't look pretty but otherwise it was OK.  I went in early in the morning and was home for lunch.

I had the stitches out 2 weeks later but I'd gone back to work before that with a dressing over the scar.
