Here are my symptoms. Can you diagnose me?
« on: October 30, 2013, 05:53:35 PM »
I went to my doctor, did his tests, but they all came back normal. I am going to speak with him again soon for my next steps, but thought I'd post here also for some internet opinions.

Patient:
Male, 25yo, Asian descent, 6'0", 162lbs
No preexisting conditions, runs on a treadmill 3-5 times per mo, plays golf ~12 times per year

Symptoms:
Chronic knee pain since puberty, 80% of the time manifests at night when I'm trying to sleep. Stretching will provide temporary relief. Pain is responsive to Advil/Tylenol/aspirin. Dull pain behind the knee cap. Pain can be anywhere between 1 and 10. Very recently I've woken up in the middle of the night due to the pain and have had to take pain pills to get back to sleep.  :( Pain doesn't come every night... but frequency is increasing now, which is why I'm starting to see my doctor... pain is also in both knees, never at the same time, but 80% of the time it's in my left knee

Tests so far:
x-rays on both knees are normal
MRI on both knees are normal
blood tests for IgG, Lyme are normal
Urine analysis is normal, no nutritional deficiencies

Kind of at a loss... has anybody ever experienced anything similar to this? You can also ask me questions and I'll reply to them.

The honest answer is that no one here can really diagnose you. We are all just patients. I’d say if you aren’t content with the opinion given to you by your doctor, possibly seek out a second opinion. Have you seen an orthopedic specialist; or just a general practice doctor?

Symptoms given off in and around the knee can often be the same for various problems with the knee. So, I can be quick to say – “I’ve had pain in and around my kneecap too! and here is my diagnosis” – that doesn’t mean your answer is the same. Your definitive answers lie with a full work up, physical exam, tests, and history in the hands of an orthopedic specialist. If you have more info on what the doctor has told you; or can post the mri report – some people may be able to help you interpret that and give you some good follow up questions to ask your doctor.
