Questions about an mcl sprain
« on: July 01, 2013, 03:19:42 AM »
I am 28 years old and about three weeks ago I sprained my knee skateboarding. When I hurt it the pain was not severe and after 3 days the swelling went down a lot. At that point I could walk pain free with a brace, but still had some pains when my knee turned inwards. I stayed off it for the next two weeks and kept icing it. It definitely has improved and now I'm only feeling pain when I put a decent amount of pressure on my knee. However my knee is especially sensitive when I first wake up, this last for like 20 minutes. My inner knee feels tight, and sometimes looks a little puffy over the tendon.

The last two days I rode on a stationary bike, two 15 minute sessions. I used a tens unit on my knee before and after, and iced it afterward. My knee felt noticeably better afterwards both night. But when I wake up In The morning it still feels tight, and if I twist my knee I get occasional pains, that only last for a few steps then go away.

My question is if I should be rehabbing knee now despite some slight discomfort. Or should I wait til the pain gone completely to do any activity?

Hi Skateboardingpains

A visit to your doctor is most important to ensure that you have not
sustained any ligament damage.

Skateboardingpains,
Sorry to hear of your injury! I tore my MCL completely in February 2013. A Dr. visit is in order...as a grade 2 or 3 sprain will require bracing and or taping as well as some rest...be very careful with lateral movement.
Speedy healing!

Yes Dr. visit in order, I sprained my MCL snow skiing, I had to wear a brace for three weeks, it still hurts a little, but definately getting better, also you will probably need an MRI to confirm. Good news is my right knee is better, but bad news I also tore my ACL on my left knee, dealing with that at the moment, same accident, just the MCL sprain hurt worse, so we healed that one first.
