Revision of Uni-compartmental (Oxford) to TKR
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:47:15 PM »
My mother had uni-compartmental PKR using the oxford apparatus in 2006. Since that time she has continued to experience significant knee pain, "locking" and stiffness. Over the last few months she feels that her calf muscles are getting pulled and feels discomfort in her back as well which has been impacting her sleep.

Until now all the surgeons we have consulted (including the original surgeon who did both her procedures) have said that though the prosthetic was placed perfectly, she continues to have osteoarthritic changes in the lateral knee. They have typically advised her to wait as long as possible since she is only 56 right now. It's come to a point where all of us in the family (and her) feel that a more aggressive approach needs to be taken. We plan on meeting with a couple of surgeons when we visit the UK and wanted to know if there is any specific doctor someone would recommend who specializes in knee revisions (experienced with oxford PKR --> TKR). Any general comments on what you did if you've been through a similar ordeal?

Thanks!

Perhaps have a look at the surgeon list here

http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEnotes/node/2409 .  or England, listed by country/area (you don't say where in the UK you will be).  There should be a profile for the doctors and also a link to their web pages (or you can Google) where you should find details of their private practice and special interests/expertise

Also, you may find some feedback in the joint replacement parts of the discussion board (if you look further down the list on the home page)

Thanks for your reply- I'll take a look at the link. We're visiting London for a short time, would you recommend a revision specialist there? Thanks.

I don't know about TKR specifically, you'd be best to ask in the TKR board section whether anyone has any knowledge beyond what is in the information hub

http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEtalk/index.php?board=37.0

Can your surgeon in your home country not make any suggestions - they often know who's who from reading, conferences etc?

I can only vouch for my consults with him on a way less involved matter than TKR revision, but as an understanding and experienced surgeon Glyn Evan at London Bridge Knee Clinic is a possible to research. I know he does TKR, not sure about revisions. He has a helpful secretary who is usually more than happy to respond to emails and offer advice on whether he can help.

Similarly, I cannot speak highly enough of my knee surgeon.  He practices in greater London, not directly in the centre, but not far away.  One of his special interests is the use of robotics in knee replacement

This is his websire  http://www.advancedkneeclinics.co.uk/

Again, his secretary is very friendly and helpful
