Another Knee Injury - what now ?
« on: March 11, 2013, 10:19:57 PM »
Hello again fellow knee friends ! Hope everyone is doing good.  I will keep it breif but my friends on the nhs are confusing me !! I am 34 now and had in 2006 arthroscopy on damaged cartlidge right knee. then follwing year i had completly torn my acl and had hamstring gaft/reconstruction left knee. Things have never been the same, I have still been playing sports ( badly ) and the left has constantly been " poppin " out and giving way and I generally end up on my backside in pain. I have perservered with it though. Then a month ago whilst shooting with my left foot I hear a strange click in my right knee and have been in a lot of pain since. SO..I have had mri scans on both knees , seen my gp today ref results and there are alot of long words and no real advice as to what to do. My left knee results says heterogenous appearance to the medial meniscus correspopnding to the tear sustained at time of acl injury ?...does this explain why it keeps giving out ?? Ligaments intact. My right knee - tear of thr posterior horn and body of the medial meniscus . Assocaited parameniscal cyst arrising from the postero capsular. Tear exits the inferior meniscal surface. Some displaced meniscal tissue extending into the inferior gutter. Ligaments within normal limits. My gp as lovely as she wasdidnt have any real knowledge she has now refered me to specilaist , that will prob take ages and says surgery is an option up to me and my lifestyle....?. I am resigned to the fact I probably wont play football again ,the knees cant handle twist, bumps and turns but I am really into running now and want to continue with this.  I have been googling stuff all night then remembered who helpful and knowledgeable people were on this site - could anybody be kind enough to try and translate some of my results and advise what is my best next option ? Thanks for taking the time to read this !

It sounds like you have meniscal tears in both knees

I'd have a read of the meniscus section here

http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEnotes/node/2259

If the knee is giving out, it is likely that you'll need an op to trim.  It sounds like both may well need surgery - the meniscal cyst will be a result of the tear

You'll likely need a lot of  time and physio/rehab to be running and you may find yourself advised against running if any of the meniscus needs to be removed as part of the shock absorber protecting the bones will be gone

Your next step is to see a knee specialist and discuss the options

Good luck :)
