MPFL Information/ my fun story
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:07:40 AM »
So the date of the Accident was August 11, 2012. I was standing and my knee gave out dislocated and relocated then I fell into the water. Went to the hospital that day and was given a knee immobilizer and sent home with pain medication and to follow up with a doctor that would become my new primary care physician. Meet with my doctor on August 13, 2012 and he decided based on the x-ray that I needed to have an mri done. I got the mri on August 15, 2012.

Based on the results Doctor said that yes I need to get into a orthopedic specialist. In my appointment with was on August 23, 2012 he let me know that I had torn some ligaments and that I was going to need surgery. So he sent me know that I was going to see the surgeon who was going to perform the surgery.

On my appointment August 29, 2012 I meet with the surgeon who explained that I will not be having surgery because it was not needed for the small tear or sprain of my mcl. He put me in a compression stocking along with a brace and said I was on the tail end of the pain so I wouldn't need any pain meds, he said that I would be fine and be able to go to a business meeting in which I would be going on an airplane in Oct. He prescribed me physical therapy twice a week. I began having more and more pain that was increasing so I put a call in and saw him on September 6, 2012. In that appointment she noticed my toes where moving at a weird rate and started me on gabapentin for nerve pain and oxycondone for the knee pain. After that I saw Dr.  again in September I called again not being able to sleep or control the pain. I went in and Dr. decided that I be taking Amitriptoline and that my pain is just nerve pain and that my leg is suffering from rsd. I kept the brace on. Then I had trouble breathing from the pain and had a reaction from the electrode therapy that was done on September 12, 2012 and went to the hospital on September 14, 2012. They did an ultrasound on my leg to check for a blood clot and put me on dilauded. With the dilauded I had no pain relief and saw Dr. the next week. He decided to take the leg brace off as it was doing more damage to the nerve pain. I kept asking if he could see my mri again or if I could get another because I felt like there was seriously so something else wrong. He said he looked at it and there is nothing he missed and that I need to just go to physical therapy and they will help with the nerve pain and not to do electrode therapy again until my nerve pain is gone.

On October 1, 2012 I felt like I had reinjured my knee from it bending the wrong way too fast in a recliner so I went to the hospital in large amounts of pain and they did a xray finding nothing broken so I was released. I saw him again on October 4, 2012 and he said he looked through everything and that there is no change at all. He said he is going to refer me to a pain management because it is all the rsd and I need to have a sympathetic nerve block to fix it. I finally got into the pain management clinic toward the end of October (Don't have date on hand). Met with the pain specialist and he decided that the nerve block would be beneficial to help with the pain and I scheduled the nerve block for November 2, 2012 with a pain specialist at the UW Harborview clinic.

After the nerve block I had more serve pain and went to Harborview on November 3, 2012 having weird reactions. They had a neurologist see me and said that I need to get a second opinion this is not just rsd. I got an appointment with a new doctor for November 6, 2012 and in 10 minutes of just looking at my x-ray noticed bone fragments and had me take the compression sock off because it was just making the rsd worse. And in my second appointment with the new doctor he explained that I had a torn mpfl and bone marrow edema that needed to be taken care of immediately especially since it has been so long and that my knee cap is essentially dislocating at every physical therapy appointment I had and the swelling was hiding that. We scheduled surgery to repair the ligament that is completely torn.

Surgery is FINALLY happening December 28, 2012 and I am soooo frustrated with the way this has all happened and really not knowing much about what is actually going to happen Friday... I think I am really nervous... :/ oh well here we go right. Anything ANYONE can say or give advice with would be greatly appreciated... :) Thank you

Yeah, I had a surgeon tell me it was nerve pain too. When my knee was totally torn up and destroyed-bone fragments too like you. Do you have confidence in your surgeon? Have you discussed everything with him/her? I will keep my fingers crossed for you that this surgery fixes the problem.
Accident 2011: permanent dislocation, hole under the patella, bone fragments/debris embedded, scar tissue, 3 torn ligaments, fracture, cartilage sheared off, contracture,

I have full confidence in my new surgeon.. I'm still just nervous about it all and taking so much time off work I keep reading things that contradict each other its hard to know what's true and what is truly happening. Just thinking good thoughts and trying to make it to tomorrow...

Are you referring to journal articles or anecdotal evidence? Because people's experiences vary greatly. If you have a very good surgeon and you follow all instructions you shouldn't have any problems. People post here either because they're stumped and don't know what exactly is wrong or because they've had bad outcomes so don't let the site scare you. On the other hand reading people's posts will help you not to make the same mistakes-something I'm eternally grateful for.
Continue to read this board and update us on your progress. Lots of people read and don't post so you'll be helping them as well. Good luck in your surgery!

Well I had surgery December 28 at 9:30 am... I am still a little confused as to what exactly happened. I was told I was going to be getting MPFL reconstruction, however when I woke up after the surgery they didn't do a very good job explaining what actually happened... It sounds like a lateral release, and they had to shave down the kneecap. I have no idea what they did because no one actually explained after what I had done. Apparently when they started waking me up after surgery I was unresponsive and had trouble breathing I still don't know exactly what happened. I also had a high fever which was messing with my body temperature. The nurses paged my surgeon and he came over and decided that yes I need to stay overnight in the hospital do they could monitor me better for the next 24 hours. Once I was moved to another floor of the hospital. I spent 4 hours in the recovery room because no one could figure out what was wrong with me.
I stayed in the hospital and realized just how hard the next few weeks are truly going to be in the long run. I am keeping my positive attitude because what else can I do. I also left the hospital December 29 but now it seems I have developed something new don't know what it is but calling the nurse hotline just praying it's not pneumonia... this has been a journey that just keeps throwing curve balls along the way.
