Outer knee agonising pain - help/advise reqd pls
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:56:55 PM »
Hi all, new member here! Have had a problem with my R outer knee for 5-6 yrs now.  Only seems to be a happen when I get up from kneeling down and pain only seems to initially be in outer and rear of knee.  Feel a hard pinging type sensation (like a thick tight elastic band pops out and in again) and intense pain, but usually over within 1-2 mins.  Dependant on severity knee can ache from 0-3/4 days afterwards.  Last couple weeks has got lot worse (been decoraating).  10 days ago it happened again, but this time couldn't weight bear or straighten leg at all (due to intense pain).  No improvement 6 hrs later, so visit to A&E (on crutches).  Xrays showed arthiritis outer knee compartment and consultant said I need to see my GP for urgent appt with a knee surgeon.  8 hrs later things suddenly went back to normal (not gradually).  4 days ago it happened again, but this time couldn't straighten leg or weight bear for 3 days.  Felt as though knee was locked and weak and to try and straighten leg or weight bear was agonising.  Once again pain went very suddenly (overnight in bed) and normal movement returned just as suddenly.  However this time I have now developed intense pain in my calf at the top under the rear of my knee, made worse by walking on it. So am now very restricted in my movements, due to calf pain!  Have made appt to see GP, but couldn't get in for 3 wks!  Incidentally, no pain at all in knee when sat down and knee bent and no pain at all when touching/pressing around knee area and no swellling at all either. The difference between being sat and trying to walk is incredible in terms of pain.  Any advise anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated and hope I have posted this in the correct place (never joined a forum or any decsription before).  Thank you.

I think it would be a good idea to see a specialist soon. You probably have kneecap maltracking given that the damage is confined to the outer compartment. Until you can get to see one, it might be best to avoid aggravating activities like kneeling.
Have had tilted kneecaps for many years, and occasional patellar tendinitis.

When you see the GP, ask for an MRI and a referral to an orthopaedic specialist (did you actually see one before?) :)  Could be a soft tissue problem in addition to the arthritis perhaps

Good luck :)
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
2nd scope on 16/12/10
RK arthroscopy on 5/2/15
Lateral meniscus trim, excision of hoffa's fat pad, chondral stabilisation
LK scope 10.1.19 medial menisectomy, trochlea microfracture, general tidy up

Hi

I agree with the others you need an MRI to see exactly whats going on..

Even though you may have some arthritis it could be something simple to repair like a cartilage tear. Or it could be a strained or partially torn ligament.  Either way you won't know until you have further advice.

let us all know how you get on and gud luck!
'96 ACL reconstruction
'09 Arthroscopy/cartilage repair
Diagnosed with Grade 4 OA no medial cartilage and significant varus alignment
'11 fitted with off loading knee brace
'12 HTO, meniscus transplant, acl reconstruction & microfracture all in 1 go!

I had a very little cartilage damage in my knee not even visible on MRI that gave the same issues as you have. It was discovered when I had a scope. So even minor things can give you lots of trouble. Be careful with your leg and don't overdo or do any that makes you feel worse.
Surgery 6 times left knee torn meniscus, RSDS,chondromalacia, nervdamage cause constant nervpain, chronic inflamm.
Spinaldamage wheeler 100%.
Right knee damaged aug-06, use brace surgery 4/9-07.LCL tear.

Thank you for all the replies guys.  Very useful.  I have now seen my GP,  who has referred me to the orthopaedic people.  She mentioned a meniscular tear or perhaps they would just recommend physio.  Certainly hope not, as since the last episode, I can even feel my knee attempting to do the same thing now just getting in/out the car or going down shallow steps - and even getting into bed!  If I even turn my torso slightly in a certain way whilst standing, I can feel it threatening to do the same again.  Each time this happens, I just know that if I continue to move in the same way just a couple of centimetres more, it will just happen again. Most annoying and frustrating, as I can't believe how limiting it is and I am normally on the go 24/7, but I am just so nervous that it will happen again.  Previously, I have always been able to 'return to normal', between episodes.  I'm no whimp and neither am I the type to sit around indulging in self pity, but the pain, when it 'locks' is indescribable.  So, lets hope that I can get some answers soon!  Thank you again for all the advise and good wishes.  Its great to have somewhere like this to visit for support and I will be sure to let you know how I get on.

Whilst you're waiting for the appt you might like to try a light weight support to help confidence. Even the sports ones you can buy can help, I found wearing one to be quite beneficial when my knee muscles were weak. Good luck with the appt.
