Disloacated Knee - fracture, torn ligament...im a dancer :/
« on: August 12, 2012, 10:13:05 PM »
my mate has put me onto this site. its my first post.

so 10 weeks ago i was dancing in a street dance competition. I was freestyling so i cant tell you the move i was doing, but one min i was stood up, the next min i felt the knee cap go and dropped ot the floor like a ton of bricks. an offduty paramedic put it back in place for me after about 10 mins. The shock got me through the inital pain, then when the pain kicked in, the gas and air saved me.
i went straight to A+E had an Xray to confirm it was all in the right place then put in a full leg splint until my orthapedic appointment 3 days later.
I was kept in the splint and crutches. Sent for MRI scan which confirmed a fracture and torn ligament (not completely torn but hangin on just). There was a lot of swelling. but was not advised how much ice to use so i probably did not ice the knee as much as i should. I was in the splint for 8 weeks before he took it off and said "il refer u to physio but til the wean urself off crutches and try to bend it". That was scary as i didnt know what the knee could and couldnt do and felt id been left without  any advice, but dealt with it.

im having physio, twice a week, with that shock therapy thing with the magnet. its not bending as much as he wants yet. and the swelling is STILL there 10 weeks later. so physio said i should have been icing it every 2 hours for 20 mins. but as people who work may know its just not physically possible. im doing my physio exercises and icing it as much as i can around owrk.
its bending at about 50 degrees now. i can walk slowly, i can drive pain free. but everything else is just painful.

i just wanna know if its normal. the swelling after so long. the pain, i have started this week getting shooting pains that stop me in my tracks.
also more importantly to me. wen can i look into getting back into dancing . i have to be able to dance to get my teaching qualifiacation, which is basically my career plan.

they are thinking no surgery. but would people say if ur career is a physical one its best to do it and get it out of the way or pray i dont have problems in the future.

im quite a tough cookie who hasnt had a day off work (apart from hospital and physio appointments) i still teach my classes of dance and performing arts to kiddies even wen i had my splint on so im ready to work hard. i just need a few answerss for my sake of mind and planning for the future. thank you to ANYONE who took the time to read this and bigger thanks to those who reply!!!

Hey hon!

As a hip hop dancer myself I know where you stand. I used to teach winter classes for hip hop but injured myself playing soccer in May and that's not been possible this year so, no income, big bills. Tons of fun.

I did much the same thing - two ligaments torn badly, bones chipped, lots of fun basically. I had swelling around my knee for almost two months after my first injury. Some people are more disposed to swelling I was told so I wouldn't be too worried. Keep your RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) up as much as possible. If it doesn't hurt stick your leg up on the back of the couch when watching TV, keep a compression bandage on at all times and ice every two hours for twenty minutes is crazy impossible so I kept up 15mins on, 15 mins off at least once or twice any time I could get a chance. Again TV time is best for this but any time works really. 3-4 times a day if possible (but on days off you can make it for it - it still works).

That said, that was my first dislocation, which I recovered from and was running again. I thought it was over. I was wrong. I pivoted while picking up something and it partly-dislocated a second time. That was a month ago. I still have massive swelling and can only bend my knee to 125 degrees (my full range is 145). I have torn my MPFL in half and need surgery. I have been told that without this surgery my kneecap WILL (not may) come out again and I will never play soccer or dance.

Due to the high impact moves of hip hop dance especially I strongly recommend an orthopaedic surgeon. I was treated at a public hospital fracture clinic for my first dislocation and they screwed up big time. He will know if surgery is a must or is traditional treatment is enough.

You're clearly a hard-ass with a high pain threshold and a desire to get it fixed, and mind is a big part of this, so I have no doubts you'll get on top of this whatever the case may be. Hope to hear you're back street dancing again soon and I can join you next year after my surgery is done! lol

Once you dislocate your kneecap, you'll most likely dislocate it again in future. Don't stress too much, as getting muscle strenght back is a very important factor to prevent dislocations.

Surgery doesn't necessarely mean that you'll have to stop any activity in future. I had a TTT to prevent dislocations (also have chondromalacia, patellar dysplasia with malformed patellas) and improve tracking. Still very active, just got back from a 7K run and am a competitive badminton player. am an ERnurse and work a lot of shifts on ambulance services, so knees are under stress all of the time. They are holding up fine, however damage is done and damaged cartilage can't be cured. I am happy with the results so far. But I know my knees won't hold forever.

Keep your head up, you'll dance again, but take care of that knee !!!

well it will be 3 months on sunday that i did the injury.
it is bending a lot more. the pain is horrid. but coz i got a good pain threshold u cant tell unless iv been on it all day then the limp comes back in play.
so i was at physio today having that electroshock therapy. and he sees me come in and that im walking better as im blanking out the pain. and he says your walking ten times better now guess its working. so im like yea its bending loads but the pain is horrid to which he said 'wel the pain is easing coz your walking better' but i was thinking how rude presuming... its actually worse at the min as the pain has started keeping me up at night recently like it used to. its hurting to move it around and stuff. the only time it doesnt hurt is wen im driving weirdly enuf. lol. So aparently because its bending more so im walking better he tells me the pain im feeling isnt there . so he has decided one more electro therapy then he's leaving me to in for 6 weeks, then il be back.
I dont wanna be left to it for 6 weeks. i cant go much futher than i am now if its still swelling and hurting and no muscle strength!!

I kinda wanna go private if people think it would be worth it to get it moving faster. i NEED to get back dancing for my teaching course audition. my classes start again 8th sep and i cant do wot i normally do. I taught about half hour today helping my teachers at a summer school im hosting and no my knee is aching to hell.

im back at hospital on the 10th with the orthapedic doctor....is it worth asking for a meeting with the orthapedic surgeon to get an opinion????

or just wait to see if it happens again?!!?

thanks so so much for replying . it means loads to me. Thank you

You need to be straightforward with your PT. Clearly he needs to work on his social skills because I have high pain threshold too but mine's constantly asking me about my pain and whether my lack of bending is psychological or actual pain. Be honest with him and just go 'I'm so glad I'm walking better but my pain is like an 1//10 so, um, no...'

My best advice is DO NOT wait to see if it happens again. You might just make it worse. What you could fix by seeing an OS this time might be half of what will be done if you just sit and wait and let it happen a second time. Trust me, my second injury hurts a million times more than my first, even those the dislocation was much less traumatic in a medical sense.

Don't be scared of surgery, as Leentje says, if it happens it happens. I'm hoping for a good result on mine. So if you're scared to see an OS in case he says surgery don't be. If it makes you better than it's worth it.

Good luck!
