ACL Post Op Scare!! Help Please
« on: August 28, 2012, 09:58:54 PM »
Hey all,

Right had my ACL hamstring graft done 5 weeks ago and on friday I went out and slipped on a couple of steps.  I do not remember any popping noise or twisiting, plus my friend kinda grabbed me to lesser my blow.

Saturday I awoke with swelling and little pain not much, and couldnt walk on it properly at all.  I iced my knee, took painkillers and elevated the bad boy.  Now I can walk on it pretty well but there is swelling still above the knee joint, bottom part of my quads.

What are the usual symptoms of tearing your graft?  Not sure If i have done it, I have decent ROM, bending is restricted due to the swelling, no pain at all.

Other points I would mention are that when I extend my knee, i get a weird sponge like feel in my knee around on medial and lateral side, would that be fluid just moving around?  Also as my knee does not fully extend when i walk i feel clicks now and again, could that be from the slight fall or the ACL op, i.e. Quads not being strong as of yet?

Any help would be welcome! Being extremely paranoid and panicky. Thanks

It is hard to say whether or not you damaged your graft, and clicking isn't unusual after an ACLr.  The fact that you have swelling that has limited your flexion and extension, and that your graft is nearing it's weakest point, makes me think that you should probably make an appointment with your OS and get it checked out!  You may have not done anything serious, but if it were me, I think I would get it looked at!  After going through all of this, I think it is better to be safe than sorry!

Good luck, and I hope all is fine with your graft!

Hey thanks for the reply!

Well I went to the A+E today and saw my physio by chance who skipped me ahead and he had a look, did one test, mainly moving the knee joint, and he said it feels fine.  By looking at the swelling he did say it doesnt look torn, but told me to reduce the swelling.

I do have an appointment with the knee specialist clinic on Monday, so went in today for precaution.

Its just a whole pain, knees are bad design flaws lol.  But I shall keep you updated when i find more out on monday. fingers crossed everything is good.
